Pasajes (aka Pasaia) is a fishing port and municipality on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Spain, facing the Bay of Biscay. It lies at the narrowest point where the square shape of Spain connects with France, 11 km to the NE. It is part of the autonomous community of Basque Country. Spanish and Basque are the co-official languages.
This Basque village is said to be the send-off port for many famous travellers, including General Lafayette who set out in 1777 to aid the American Revolution. Here the French writer Victor Hugo penned his Voyage aux Pyrénées in 1843. Victor Hugo House is the home fo the tourist office.
