Cruises from Cayenne (French Guiana)
Cayenne (pop. 132,000) is the capital of French Guiana, an overseas department of France, situated on a former island at the mouth of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic Coast. The important port Dégrad des Cannes is located on the estuary of the Mahury River, 9 km to the SE of the Cayenne River estuary. Timber, rosewood essence, rum, and gold are exported in small quantities.
Cayenne is very ethnically diverse, with populations of Creole, Haitian, Brazilian, European, and Hmong and other Asian origins. Along this coast the Guyanas region includes, from W to E, Spanish Guyana (now part of Venezuela), British Guyana (Guyana), Dutch Guyana (Suriname), French Guyana, and Brazilian Guyana.
