Ureparapara (also known as Parapara; once Bligh Island) is the third largest island in the Banks Group in northern Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific. Three small villages on the island have a combined population of around 440. The caldera rim is often clouded in mist, the sand is black, and the forest lush. This is perhaps the most spectacular island in the archipelago, an old volcanic cone that has been breached by the sea on its east coast, forming a spectacular 3 km long harbour, surrounded on three sides by 300 – 600 m cliffs. Yes, you actually cruise into the cone of a volcano.

The main village is at Divers Bay which also has a guest house for visitors. If you wish you can choose to join the Guest Lecturer for a guided walk to the top of the caldera. There are some Bat Caves on the crater side. The island is World Heritage Listed for the island's Nowons and Votwos, coral stone and earthen platforms of major social importance in the community. The 4 m high stone platform called Votwos was used to serve as a ceremonial platform for the high-profile grade-taking (rank-conferring) ceremonies. Perhaps in one of the fresh water streams you’ll see woman creating ‘water music.’

All visitors are by yachts, speedboats or explorer cruise ships. You will be welcomed by the local people with a ‘kastom’ dance, and perhaps have the opportunity to taste some local food, enjoy some traditional games, see some traditional dances, listen to story-telling and singing, visit cultural sites, as well as enjoy some carving, weaving and even shell-money-making demonstrations. All this adds up to a once in a lifetime experience.
