Kostolac is a small Serbian town on the Danube river in the Branicevo District. It lies 60 km E of the capital Belgrade, and 20 km from the border with Romania. This is a farming district, with the chimneys of two coal-fired power plants on the skyline, and a giant open cut coal mine to the east of the town. A 4 km walk from the river through town takes you to a canal beach Topoljar, with sun shades and swimming. Kostolac is best known for the archaeological site some 10 km by road to the east of the town, that contains the remains of the major Roman outpost city of Viminacium.

Viminacium was a former Roman outpost with wide streets, luxurious villas, extensive baths, and an amphitheater just recently partially rebuilt and opened to the public. Interestingly, it was discovered by a professional architect Mihailo Valtrovc, together with 12 prisoners as workers, in the late 19th C. The city dates back to the 1st century AD and contains archaeological remains of temples, wide streets, squares, luxurious villas, one of the largest amphitheatres in the Balkans, palaces, hippodromes, extensive Roman baths as well as a mausoleum.

It is estimated that some 40,000 items found here are now kept in the National Museums in Belgrade and Pozarevac. Additionally, more than 13,500 graves have been discovered. Of special interest are the tombstones and sarcophagi - graves of masonry construction - that are often decorated with relief representations of scenes from mythology or daily life. Especially interesting are the frescoes of the 4th century tombs, with the notion of young women in artistic poses that add to the value of this range of antique art. Visiting this former Roman outpost that occupies an extensive area will continue to attract, not only historians, but visitors interested in something fascinating.
