Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The mysteries and romance associated with the words Bora Bora bring an almost mystical presence to the island; it is arguably the most famous island in the world. Part of the allure has to be its almost unbelievable beauty. Two towering peaks of sheer black rock dominate the centre of the island and make an impressive backdrop to an assortment of blue waters that dazzle the eyes. Whatever one chooses to do, visitors will thoroughly revel in this wonderful Polynesian island paradise.

Bora Bora is a centre for snorkelling and scuba diving in and around its lagoon, its most treasured feature, while you can also jet ski, windsurf, or simply bask in its warmth. Many species of sharks and rays inhabit the surrounding body of water, and there are a few dive operators on the island offering manta ray and shark-feeding dives. While most of the tourist destinations are water based and public transport on the island is non-existent, it is possible to visit attractions on land such as the seven WWII cannons, giant cannons that were put in place by the United States during World War II.

Bicycles are the recommended method of transport and there are also small ‘fun-cars’ for hire in Vaitape, the administrative centre. One can also rent a motorboat to explore the lagoon. There are a variety of tours and safaris available, including the opportunity to go scuba diving from a submarine, as well as simply enjoy relaxing in a glass-bottomed boat. Plan a motu (reef islet) picnic, and learn about the local culture. Shopping for the famed black pearls and jewellery, or visiting the local restaurants, are also welcome activities.
