Kuwait City is the capital of the emirate of Kuwait, on the shore of the Persian Gulf. It is a bustling metropolis of high-rise office buildings, luxury hotels, wide boulevards and well-tended parks and gardens. Kuwait was first settled in the early 18th Century and quickly became a successful and thriving sea port, with its own dhow fleet of about 800 and trading relations to Baghdad and Damascus. Today its seaport is used by oil tankers, cargo ships and many pleasure craft.

With the discovery of oil in 1936, the city’s standard of living improved dramatically and continues. Kuwait’s booming economy has seen many international hotel chains open hotels in the country, and a large variety of shopping malls which serve as the basis of Kuwaiti social life. A large metro rail network across the entire city and suburbs is under construction.

Kuwait Towers, the city's unofficial symbol and top attraction were opened in 1979. The first, 178 m high, houses the Viewing Sphere complete with a rotating viewing platform with a small cafe/bar, and a lower sphere housing a restaurant. The second tower, 145.8 m high, is for water storage only, while the third, sphereless spike mostly serves to light up the other two at night. Best visited, but also the most crowded, at sunset.
