Höfn (pronounced Hup with a glottal stop) is an Icelandic fishing town on the SE of the island, with a population of 2,200. The harbour is sheltered, and surrounded by small islands, shifting sandbars, and glacial rivers. The main attraction of tourists is the scenic view of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe by volume, which covers a number of volcanoes, and provided the setting for several films (James Bond, Tomb Raiders, and Batman).

Visit the Höfn Glacial Museum with its displays of explorer equipment, geology, ecology and history of the Vatnajökull glacier. There are also the Höfn Nautical Museum and Höfn Folk Museum. The town itself is situated on a flat coastal plain, surrounded by inland mountains and to the west you can see the edge of the vast ice cap slowly descending to the sea. Take a stroll around the town’s modern low-set and attractive shopping area, the moored fishing boats, and fish processing factories.

During tourist season trips via 4WD and super jeeps are offered to the Vatnajökull glacier (60 km away), then snowmobiles with gear and equipment provided. Try to visit the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon with its icebergs floating out into the Atlantic Ocean. Though a long trip, this is a dramatic experience (as it was for James Bond in “Die Another Day”).
