Cruises visiting Maumere & all Maumere cruises for  2019

View Maumere 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 1 cruises from Maumere with today's best deals!

Maumere, population 50,000 and capital of the Sika Regency, is the largest town on Flores, the largest island in the East Nusa Tenggara province chain of islands. To the west on this ‘string of pearls’ are Java, Bali and Komodo (to name some of the better-known islands; and to the east are Sumba, West Timor, and independent East Timor. Maumere faces north to the Flores Sea. In addition to tourism, the main economic activities on Flores are agriculture, fishing, salt and seaweed production. The primary food crops being grown on Flores are rice, maize sweet potato and cassava, while the main cash crops are coffee, coconut, candle nut and cashew.

Visit the market in the morning for an authentic taste of the lives of people. On sale are the local produce of vegetables & fruit and livestock. Find out about tenun ikat cloth, a method of weaving that uses pre-dyed thread to create patterns; an art form using natural dyes. And buy an ikat sarong to wear back home. Be adventurous and get around inexpensively on an ojek (motorcycle taxi) or bemo (mini-triwheeled bus), and eat locally at a warung – soto ayam (chicken soup), nasi campur (special fried rice) and ikan bakar (BBQ chicken) – very tasty.

Ten kilometres along the coast road east is the Sea World Club Resort, for fine beach scenery and a good meal. Flores also offers traditional villages with megalithic cultures set in volcanic landscapes, sunny beaches, and coral reefs. Wildlife includes species of lizards, monkeys and parrots. There is also abundant marine life with reef sharks, sperm whale dolphins and tropical fish, with around 40 different dive sites in the Marine Garden of the Bay of Maumere. Dive into the crystal clear water with normal visibility of 60 - 150 metres. Unique to this island is the world famous Mt. Kelimutu with its three coloured lakes.
