Stretched along the Atlantic Ocean, Ghana's most populous city Accra boasts glittering beaches, monumental buildings, museums, libraries, galleries, and traditional markets. Accra's architecture reflects its colonial history, with 17th century castles standing alongside modern skyscrapers. A melting pot of numerous cultures, the city's central financial and shopping districts contrast sharply with the less affluent residential areas. Located between two of Accra's most expensive hotels, Labadi Beach is arguably the best beach in Accra. On the other hand, Bojo Beach with its powerful waves is great for surfing. This short stretch of the Atlantic Coast features several makeshift cafe-restaurants, lots of souvenir vendors, as well as the probability of an amazing cast of characters who will entertain you with drumming, dancing, pony rides, and acrobatic performances.

The National Museum has wonderful displays of Ghana's culture and history, including the slave-trade and Ashanti Kingdom. If interested in contemporary art or fine art, then be sure to visit the Artists Alliance Gallery. Huge metal sculptures mix with antique Asafo flags, kente cloth, furniture, and fantastic masks. One of Ghana's most respected artists, Ablade Glover, is responsible for this three storey treasure-trove. Many visit Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park that is home to monuments and statues, and has a small museum dedicated to the country's founding father. The history shared and knowledge gained from a visit to the W.E.B. Dubois Centre make it priceless.

If looking for a chance to relax, visit the botanical gardens that are about a 90 minutes drive from Accra. Situated in the Aburi Hills that offer great views, the climate is far less humid and very relaxing. The basic layout of the gardens is about 100 years old and there are plenty of mature trees and plants. Jamestown is the oldest part of Accra, and is similar in many ways to Zanzibar's 'Stonetown' though it has not yet been restored, and so it is not usually highlighted on tourist itineraries.
