Holyhead is the largest town on the island of Anglesey, off the coast of Wales, and is perhaps known best for being a busy ferry port. It is also well known for offering easy access to some of the best attractions in the country. Subsequently, visitors typically spend the whole day on day trips through Wales to see, for example, the three nearby medieval castle towns, the more distant Snowdonia National Park and the Ffestiniog Steam Railway. However, visitors should also note that the town has a number of interesting attractions and is a bustling shopping and visitors' area in its own right. The town centre itself, built around St. Cybi’s Church, which is situated inside one of Europe’s few three-walled Roman forts (the fourth wall being the sea, which used to come up to the fort) is a must-see.

Holyhead's sea heritage is remembered in a maritime museum housed in what is said to be Wale’s oldest lifeboat house, while its arts centre, the Ucheldre Centre that holds regular arts exhibitions, performances, and workshops, is located in the chapel of an old convent. The Maritime Museum, in the centre of town, has comprehensive information on more than a hundred shipwrecks around the island, as well as a range of artefacts recovered from the Irish Sea that depict the maritime history of the town from the Iron Age to modern times. The South Stack Lighthouse outside the port has a long climb to the top, but the views are excellent.

The Romans also built a watchtower on the top of Holyhead Mountain inside a prehistoric hill fort. Settlements in the area date from prehistoric times, with circular huts, and burial chambers, together with the highest concentration of standing stones in the UK. The current lighthouse, on South Stack on the other side of Holyhead Mountain, is open to the public. The area is also popular with birdwatchers. It also offers excellent fishing and sailing facilities, as well as good local beaches. If interested in taking on a completely new challenge, then be aware that Holyhead's cliffs are used for coasteering, a water sport which involves jumping off cliffs at different heights and angles.
