Gayle has always been very helpful. I went on this cruise with my friend, but my husband and I have booked two cruises through Gayle and have been more than happy with the service."

Dartmouth is a town in Devon in the SW of England, set on the banks of the estuary of the River Dart. Historically, as it was a deep-water port for sailing vessels, it was used as the meeting point for the crusades of 1147 and 1190. Today, it lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Beauty and is a major tourist destination. There is also the opportunity to undertake some wonderful wildlife watching. The delightful streetscapes of narrow lanes and stone stairways reflect both the Elizabethan and medieval eras.

A significant number of the historic buildings are listed. One of the most obvious is the Butterwalk, built from 1635 to 1640. Its intricately carved wooden fascia is supported on granite columns, and Charles II held court there in 1671. That same room now forms part of the very popular Dartmouth Museum. Much of the interior survives from that time. In contrast the Woodlands Family Theme Park is a great day out for the whole family from the very young to the big kid in all of us. There’s no end of things to do as it even includes a Zoo-Farm, and places to eat - rain or shine.

Dartmouth Castle, one of the most picturesquely-sited fortresses in England, has for over 600 years guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth. Surprisingly, it incorporates the fine church of St Petrox. Also included is the Victorian 'Old Battery' with its remounted heavy guns, guardrooms and maze of passages to be explored. There is also the opportunity to watch a dramatic film sequence that recreates a Victorian gun-firing. Indeed, throughout the fortress, displays retell the six centuries of castle history; and don’t forget to take in the delightful views from the battlement.
