St Malo (aka Saint-Malo, Sant-Maloù, Saent-Malô) on the English Channel in Brittany in the NW of France, is an amazing, historic, ancient walled city. With its tall granite mansion blocks lining the attractive lanes and squares, its numerous ramparts that offer amazing views, and its cobbled streets brimming with restaurants, bars and shops, it is considered to be the most attractive channel port in France. The Citadel, aka the Old Town, was originally built on a rocky island at the mouth of the Rance estuary, a strategic position for defence, but today the modern harbour connects the citadel to the mainland.

St Malo has one of the highest concentrations of sea food restaurants in Europe and is famous for its local oysters from the nearby village of Cancale. The presence of vast clean beaches right on the city's doorstep is a big bonus. The city of St-Malo stretches beyond the Old Town to include the district of St-Servan and the modern seaside resort of Parame. This is a place with the most dashing past, and a present rich in echoes. There are some absolute delights awaiting those willing to venture a relatively short distance from the town.

Mont St-Michel is located 50 km to the east just inside neighbouring Normandy. The slender towers and sky-scraping turrets are one of the classic images of northern France. Rising from flat white sands, the abbey sits atop a small island encircled by stout ramparts and battlements, connected to the mainland by an old causeway. Twenty kilometres to the south the stunning medieval city of Dinan rises up alongside the River Rance. The surrounding Emerald Coast with its pleasant sandy beaches offers some of the most traditional seaside resorts in this part of France.
