Cairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt, and often referred to as The City of a Thousand Minarets due to its amazing Islamic architecture. It is situated along the banks of the River Nile. Be sure to visit the Giza Pyramids and the nearby Saqqara Pyramid Complex where visitors will see Egypt's first step pyramid. Perhaps take a camel ride, and if time permits enjoy a Nile river barge cruise. Also of great interest are the libraries with their fascinating treasures, and the Egyptian Museum with its countless ancient artefacts. You will thoroughly enjoy your visit to this centre of the region's political and cultural life.

An early morning start will give you the opportunity to watch the sun rising over the pyramids. An alternative option is to see the truly amazing light show and narration of the pyramids, in the evenings. Don't miss seeing the sphinx, and view the beautiful architecture of the Citadel and the Mohammad Ali Mosque. Walking the historic area and Cairo’s oldest section, the ancient heart of the Coptic Christian community that features five original churches, the first mosque built in Egypt and the oldest synagogue - all representing three of the major world religions - is truly fascinating.

Cairo is home to some of the world's most famous sights, including the much loved Sphinx and its well-known broken nose, and the treasures of Tutankhamun. Cairo's back-streets still retain much of their medieval character and are worth exploring. Taking a stroll along the waterfront, Corniche, is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre and become aware of the everyday rituals based around city life. For shoppers, a ‘must-see’ is the Khan al-Khalili bazaar, while Zamalek a quiet area on Gezira Island renowned for its upscale shopping.
