Dragon Hill - Cerro Dragón - is on the NW coast of Santa Cruz, an island in the Galápagos archipelago, Ecuador. Lying one kilometre inland, it rises symmetrically to a point 120 m high. It is so named because it is inhabited by many sizeable land iguanas – yellow, brown and orange. Indeed, there are both land and sea iguanas. It’s wise to wear closed and comfortable walking shoes as well as a hat, so that after landing by Zodiac, visitors can concentrate on looking for giant cacti, iguanas, flamingos, pelicans, sea lions, colourful lizards, Darwin finches, and Great Blue Herons.

Many of the iguana nests are right next to the walking path in the red soil landscape. The iguanas differ from island to island, they are not afraid of visitors, and there are so many be careful not to step on one. The rule is, keep 2 m from animals. Walk up to the hill top for great views. The flamingos seen in a nearby lagoon add colour to the scenery. So allow for 2 hours to walk the 3 km trail around the area. Wander along the lava flows on the beach. There are six species of prickly pear cacti on the islands, and land iguanas eat them.

Intensive efforts to remove introduced species such as goats, cats and dogs have been successful, and the resident “dragons” are no longer seriously threatened. Efforts to control introduced plants and animals on this part of Santa Cruz are ongoing, and Cerro Dragon is one of few places on the islands where tourists and scientists may cross paths. . Most visitors learn a lot about nature, ecology, and appreciation of wild life after this visit.
