Explora II delivers a refined luxury cruise experience that combines spacious all-suite accommodation, exceptional dining and attentive personalised service. Sailing roundtrip from Miami through the Caribbean and Central America, this Journey to Mayan Mysteries itinerary is ideal for travellers seeking a relaxed pace, elegant surroundings and immersive shore experiences, all complemented by one of the most polished onboard atmospheres at sea.

Due to unexpected flight cancellations, I arrived in Miami on the morning of departure and made my way directly to the cruise port. With multiple ships docked at once, it was easy to see why Miami is one of the world’s busiest cruise hubs, yet the process remained impressively efficient.

Explora II departs from the newly opened MSC Miami Cruise Terminal, a modern four-level facility designed to handle large passenger volumes with ease. The terminal is spacious, well organised and easy to navigate, with a smooth flow from arrival through to embarkation.

Guests travelling with Explora Journeys enjoy a dedicated private check-in area separate from the main terminal. As an early arrival, I was welcomed into the exclusive Explora lounge where I could relax while completing formalities. The process felt seamless and personalised, with attentive staff guiding each step.

Boarding was effortless and I was greeted with a glass of pink champagne on arrival, immediately setting the tone for the voyage. The ship’s lobby makes a striking first impression, with marble floors, a sweeping staircase and a grand piano creating a refined yet inviting atmosphere. While my suite was being prepared, I headed to the Emporium Marketplace for lunch, where open kitchens showcased chefs preparing fresh pastries, pasta and pizza. The quality rivalled many excellent land-based restaurants.

Explora II is an all-suite ship, with every suite offering ocean views and a private terrace. I stayed in a Premier Penthouse, which was exceptionally spacious and featured a separate living area, walk-in wardrobe and luxurious bathroom with heated marble floors. Crisp linen, a welcome bottle of champagne and handmade chocolates reflected the ship’s understated elegance.

Service throughout the voyage was consistently attentive, with crew members remembering names and preferences, creating a genuinely personalised experience. It was this warmth and attention to detail that elevated the overall atmosphere on board.

Highlights

Sunset drinks at the Sky Bar, accompanied by live saxophone music and uninterrupted ocean views, became a daily ritual and one of the most memorable parts of the voyage.

Dining was a major highlight of the journey, with a wide range of venues offering globally inspired cuisine. Alongside the Emporium Marketplace, guests can enjoy specialty restaurants, relaxed lounges and 24-hour in-suite dining. Every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared, while service remained polished yet approachable throughout.

Public spaces were designed to feel intimate rather than crowded. There are several indoor and outdoor pools, expansive sun decks, whirlpools and quiet lounges with panoramic ocean views. One of my favourite daily rituals quickly became sunset drinks at the Sky Bar, where a DJ and live saxophonist created a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. Watching the sun disappear over the horizon with a cocktail in hand perfectly captured the ship’s sense of relaxed luxury.

The itinerary sailed roundtrip from Miami, visiting Cozumel in Mexico, Belize City in Belize, Santo Tomás de Castilla in Guatemala and Key West in Florida, with sea days in between. Each destination offered something different, although the ship itself remained the true standout.

In Belize, I experienced cave tubing through ancient limestone caves, floating beneath dramatic rock formations surrounded by lush jungle. In Key West, I joined a catamaran snorkelling excursion in crystal-clear Caribbean waters, swimming alongside tropical fish, sharks and barracudas. These experiences were memorable and made even more enjoyable by the seamless organisation and comfort provided throughout the voyage.

Cruise Tip

Arrive at least one day before embarkation where possible, particularly for long-haul international flights, to avoid the stress of travel delays impacting your cruise departure.

One of the things that impressed me most about Explora II was how calm and uncrowded the ship felt, even in popular areas. Whether relaxing poolside, dining or simply wandering the decks, there was always a sense of space and tranquillity that made it easy to completely unwind.

Overall, this Journey to Mayan Mysteries voyage delivered an excellent balance of exploration, relaxation and indulgence. From the smooth embarkation experience in Miami to the spacious suites, exceptional dining and consistently attentive service, every detail felt carefully considered. The onboard atmosphere, combined with the quality of the food and personalised hospitality, made this one of the most polished cruise experiences I have enjoyed.

Explora II is ideal for travellers seeking a luxurious, spacious and personalised cruising experience with a relaxed pace and a strong sense of refinement.
