Our Crystal Cruises journey began with a direct Qantas flight from Brisbane to Darwin, arriving around lunchtime and giving us plenty of time to make the short taxi ride to the port. Crystal staff welcomed us warmly at the terminal and embarkation was seamless, allowing us to settle in and begin enjoying the ship almost immediately.
We stayed in a Sapphire Veranda Suite, measuring around 40 square metres plus a private veranda. The suite was spacious and beautifully appointed, with a separate living area, walk-in wardrobe, comfortable bedroom and a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. Guests in some Classic Veranda Suites can also enjoy a separate bathtub and shower.
Our suite came with Crystal’s inclusive benefits, including dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities and personal butler service. Afternoon canapés were delivered to the suite each day, adding a thoughtful touch to an already attentive level of service.
The overall atmosphere on Crystal Serenity is one of understated luxury. Service was polished without feeling intrusive and the ship offered plenty of space to relax, whether around the pool, in one of the lounges or on the wraparound promenade deck.
The onboard program provided plenty of variety. Entertainment included production shows, comedy, cabaret, guest performers, live music, dance parties, karaoke and movies. During our sailing, guests could even watch the Oscars broadcast on the theatre’s large screen.
Crystal also places a strong emphasis on enrichment, with destination presentations, guest lecturers, art workshops, cooking demonstrations, technology classes, bridge and card games. For more active guests, there were pickleball and paddle tennis courts, golf nets, a fitness centre, yoga and Pilates sessions, table tennis and walking or jogging around the promenade deck.
The Aurōra Spa was a favourite place to unwind. The sauna is more intimate than those on some similarly sized ships, but the ocean views made it particularly memorable and well worth visiting.
Dining was one of the standout features of the voyage. Waterside is the ship’s main dining restaurant, serving open-seating breakfast, lunch and dinner with changing international menus and attentive white-tablecloth service. One of the more unusual highlights was the Japanese breakfast, which added something different to the morning routine.
Marketplace offers a relaxed buffet option, while The Bistro is ideal for coffee, pastries and lighter meals. Trident Grill provides casual poolside favourites and Scoops is the place for an ice cream or sweet treat.
The specialty restaurants were exceptional and we enjoyed them so much that we returned more than once. Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa serves Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, including black cod, sushi and sashimi, and is one of the most sought-after dining experiences on board.
Osteria d’Ovidio offers refined Italian cuisine inspired by regional Italy and developed in collaboration with the Alajmo brothers. Watching the tiramisu prepared by hand at the table was a memorable finishing touch.
Beefbar provides a more contemporary and relaxed dining experience, with premium beef, burgers, tacos, salads and share-style dishes. Reservations for the specialty restaurants are recommended, particularly if you prefer an earlier dining time.
Crystal Cove also became a favourite evening stop. With live piano music and gentleman dance hosts available to partner guests for a waltz, it captured the traditional elegance of Crystal particularly well.
Our first port of call was Kupang on Timor Island. It offered an interesting glimpse into local Indonesian life, although the tourism infrastructure is relatively limited. For this reason, we would recommend considering an organised Crystal excursion rather than relying entirely on independent sightseeing.
Komodo Island was the destination highlight. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the famous Komodo dragon, it was a genuine bucket-list experience.
Visitors must be accompanied by a licensed ranger while exploring the island. We chose a private tour rather than joining one of the larger ship excursions, which gave us a more personalised experience. Our ranger shared fascinating insights into the island’s flora and fauna while keeping us safely distanced from the Komodo dragons.
Travelling in a smaller group also provided excellent photography opportunities. After our walk through the national park, we visited a small local market before returning to the ship.
Our voyage concluded in Benoa, Bali, where disembarkation was exceptionally efficient. Crystal arranged our Indonesian visas on board, which made the process straightforward, and within minutes of leaving the ship we were met by our private transfer for the journey to the airport.
Crystal Serenity delivers a refined luxury experience without feeling overly formal. The combination of spacious accommodation, thoughtful service, excellent dining, enrichment and memorable destinations made this an impressive voyage and one we would readily recommend to travellers looking for comfort, quality and a relaxed onboard atmosphere.
