Their presence is the backbone of a fast-growing interest in cruising in Australia. All three vessels have come from overseas and recently been extensively refurbished and staffed by friendly international crews. The line offers budget value, and has won plaudits for its family-friendly atmosphere. Favourites are short comedy, lifestyle, food and wine cruises. As part of the company’s growth in the Australian market, Pacific Sun ceased operating in July 2012, and the gap is filled by newer and bigger ships from sister company Carnival. Carnival Spirit is now based in Sydney.
P&O Cruises attracts active and often boisterous Aussie crowds. Highlights of its 2013 program will include Mother’s Day and Christmas in July voyages, and a series of four-night cruises. Onboard activities run day and night, too extensive to list: it’s happening all the time. Night-time shows and shore excursions are all available. Food choices include formal dining rooms, Lido buffets and alternative dining steakhouses (for an added fee). Dining reservations are optional. The food gets generally favourable ratings from the Aussie crowd. Children’s clubs are staffed by qualified teachers and childcare workers. The Line has a high percentage of repeat travellers.
