We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
Orion Expedition Cruises completes its current itineraries with mv Orion in March 2014. Her new owners, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, is a US-based company that owns six explorer ships. The company draws its guests close to the environment with the involvement of expert photographers, specialist team members, remote underwater camera, and all necessary equipment, such as Zodiacs, scuba diving gear, vessels with ice hulls and shallow draft. Their ‘Australian’ ship National Geographic Orion runs itineraries that range from tropical Melanesia and the waters of Indonesia and New Guinea, to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. With just 106 passengers (and 75 crew), personal attention enables each guest to participate onshore or in the water within his/her physical limits. Itineraries will take you to locations with no special berthing facilities, and you won’t meet with regular tourists.
National Geographic Orion has been refitted for Lindblad-National Geographic, and comes with additional photographic gear and experts. The new branding builds on Orion's highly-regarded heritage. While most of NG Orion's passengers may hail from Australia, many North Americans will be joining her clientele. Guests tend to be mature, well-travelled, adventurous, and tolerant of mild discomforts that come with exploring. Yet this is expeditionary cruising with five-star luxury. Dining is buffet for breakfast and lunch, and a la carte dinners served open seating. Expect local ingredients on your plate, prepared by top chefs. Life on board is casual. And a by-word of the Company is, We take our stewardship of the environment seriously and sustainably. Cruise Critic Editors awarded Lindblad “Best for Adventure” for 2012 and 2013. Orion has taken out Gourmet Traveller Magazine Readers’ Choice Award for Best Cruise Line for the third successive year!
