Scenic Sapphire cruises for 2019-2020

Scenic Sapphire operates from April to October each year. In 2019 it offers 7, 12 and 14 night cruises on the Saône-Rhône Rivers, between Chalon-sur-Saône (by train 300 km south of Paris), and Tarascon (50 km upstream from the Mediterranean). The region is famed for the scenery of Van Gogh and Cézanne, vineyards, chateaux, culinary arts and French culture (did you ever sing ‘Sur le Pont d'Avignon’?). Stroll through picturesque villages and Roman ruins, museums and markets. The river cruise averages just 30 km each day, allowing plenty of time for shore tours. End points are Paris (with fast rail to Chalon), and Tarascon near the Côte d'Azur, just a stone’s throw from Monte Carlo and the Italian border. These cruises constitute part of longer tours that extend south to Barcelona by air and to Monte Carlo by coach. Saône-Rhône cruises also link with other river cruises, such as Paris-to-English Chanel on the Seine, Amsterdam-to-Basel (Switzerland) on the Rhine, and the Douro River in Portugal. In 2020 10-night cruises start and end in Lyon, and head upriver and downriver. At every destination Scenic Tours pre-books the best docking available for easy access to town centres and your choice of sightseeing options.

Life aboard Scenic Sapphire
Scenic Sapphire operates from April to October each year. In 2019 it offers 7, 12 and 14 night cruises on the Saône-Rhône Rivers, between Chalon-sur-Saône (by train 300 km south of Paris), and Tarascon (50 km upstream from the Mediterranean).

Scenic Sapphire was launched in 2008, refitted in 2016, and is amongst the largest of cruise vessels in Europe. The stylish public rooms have an under stated ambience, with comfortable leather sofas in the main lounge area and panoramic floor to ceiling windows offering excellent views. The Observation Lounge is one of the roomiest of any river cruise ship, and is adjoined by an open air teak deck furnished with stylish tables and chairs. This deck is exclusive to Scenic Tours, allowing guests unlimited access to outside areas. This is an essential feature on days when the top Sun Deck is closed due to the ship passing under low bridges. On board you’ll find a health-and-beauty area and two superb restaurants with the capacity to accommodate all guests at one sitting.

Accommodation
All 16 classes of staterooms are larger than industry standard, with outside views. The upper two accommodation decks have private balconies. The lowest deck has panoramic viewing windows. Stateroom amenities include AC, flat-screen TV, infotainment system, free Internet access, desk with chair, a larger-than-queen-size bed, free mini-bar, hair dryer, personal safe, shower and complimentary bathroom toiletries. Balconies have teak wood decking, coffee table and chairs. During inclement weather enclose the balcony with hand control so you still enjoy the views. An elevator services the top two accommodation decks.

Suites (19 to 30 sq.m.) are 24% larger than standard river cruise cabins. View the passing countryside through sliding double glass doors. Furnishings are tasteful and made for comfort. Ensuites have L’Occitane toiletries for that special touch. Junior Suites (23 sq.m. and Royal Suites (29/30 sq.m.) are even more spacious, with larger seating areas and separate bathtub. While every guest has private butler service, Danube Deck suites have additional services that provide many personal extras – morning tea or coffee on the balcony, shoeshine, garment press, salon appointments, and individual shore excursion arrangements. Royal and Royal Panorama Suites have in-suite dining options. There is one single suite.

Food and Dining
Waterfront dining in the main restaurant Crystal Dining (with tables for 2, 4, 6 or 8) offers flexible seating and includes a buffet breakfast with champagne, a wide selection of salads or main courses for lunch, and a four-course à la carte meal in the evening. Menus change daily and include local specialties and complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks. Enjoy the seafood gala evening. The specialty restaurant Portobello’s (for 32) offers an intimate Italian experience. Danube deck suites access the chef’s six-course Table La Rive and degustation menu, a taste of our signature dishes in one sitting. On some days the Sun Deck becomes an al fresco Teppanyaki barbecue venue.

The River Café provides light meals, snacks and refreshments that you can take anywhere at any time, and good coffees. Take a picnic hamper ashore while you wander around villages with your GPS handset. The Panorama Lounge and Bar at 31 sq.m. is spacious and affords excellent views. The bar is always open, with a selection of fine wines, boutique beers, house spirits, soft drinks and mineral water. The Observation Lounge, a teak deck at the bow of the ship, is very popular. Complimentary espresso coffee and a selection of teas are available all day. Traditional High Tea is served on the Terrace.

Entertainment
After-dinner entertainment may include traditional performances of dance and music, and informative lectures on local history, crafts, cuisine and culture inform guests about the passing region. There may be cooking classes, tastings, and culinary demonstrations. Local specialty artists come aboard to exhibit their skills. On-shore tours are port-intensive and conducted by expert guides communicating with your personal wireless headset. Take in castles, gala concerts, markets, villages and even private homes. Or, take your own independent tour using a GPS handset showing planned routes, either walking or by e-bike (with motor assisted pedalling). Listen to its voice commentary of 700 points of interest. Understandably, many places can only be seen by foot. You have a broad choice of included activities at each port of call.

On board, view the passing scenes from your balcony, or from the forward Riverview Terrace on the Sun Deck, which also has a waking track, plenty of sun lounge seats, and shade. In your stateroom read a book or select your TV viewing using the infotainment console. On the lowest deck is the Wellness area with massage, hairdresser and beauty salon. Next to Reception is a gift shop. Gratuities on-board and on-shore are not requested or expected. All entertainment is managed by a dedicated Cruise Director.
