Life aboard Costa Favolosa
Costa Favolosa divides her year between the Caribbean and Europe. The ship is in the Caribbean until mid-March 2020, offering 7-night cruises to the easternmost islands. The cruise’s end point is the port of Guadeloupe in the French territory of Basse-Terre. Stay overnight at the resort port of Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic on the island Hispaniola. Next call at British Virgin Islands, once home to Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. Then visit the duty-free French/Dutch island St Martin. The final port is French Martinique, ‘a little bit of France.’ By late April 2020 Costa Favolosa crosses the Atlantic for the Western Mediterranean for a month, then moves north during June to August, offering the choice of two itineraries: nine nights from Kiel (Germany) to far north of continental Norway, well inside the Arctic Circle; or, a 10-night tour to six Baltic sea ports (though unfortunately no overnight at St Petersburg). She then leaves Scandinavia to return to the Mediterranean from September to November 2020. Ten-night cruises run a circuit that takes in Barcelona, Savona, Marseille, Malaga, Cadiz (Seville), Lisbon, and Valencia.

Entering service mid-2011, Favolosa (Italian: “fabulous”) at 114,500 GT carries 3006 passengers. She includes the most recent Costa innovations. Towering over the lobby is a nine-deck-high, glass-domed rotunda atrium. Costa Favolosa has the fleet’s best fitness and relaxation features. Dance floors abound. Most passengers are Italian. This more of a floating resort ship than a traditional cruise vessel. The ship is best appreciated by those who like constant and noisy entertainment. Most passengers are Italian.

Accommodation
Features of Favolosa are similar to Costa’s other Concordia Class vessels. The 20 price grades come in three sizes: 2- and 4- bed interior cabins, 2- and 4- bed outside view cabins, and suites with balcony. There are two single cabins. The largest accommodation is provided in the eight Grand Suites, with queen-sized bed, and bathroom with tub and two washbasins. Staterooms are of average sizes. Of the 1,500 cabins, 55 have direct access to the Samsara Spa, and 505 have a private balcony. Of the suites, 58 have a private balcony, and 12 have direct access to the Samsara Spa.

Samsara staterooms offer extras including flat-screen TV, Samsara bath products, a wide range of health sessions, use of the thalassotherapy pool, and a table in the health-conscious Samsara Restaurant. In a standard balcony stateroom what can you expect? Twin beds convert to a queen-size bed, and large leather sofa converts to a third bed. Closets are spacious, there is a locked mini-bar, personal safe, multifunction phone and interactive TV, and spacious shower-only bathroom. Note that balconies can be wafted with cigarette smoke. Twelve cabins are wheelchair-accessible.

Food and Dining
There are two main dining rooms with two seatings. The menu specialises in pasta (50 types). With Costa cuisine, quantity rules over quality. Two alternative dining options (extra-charge, by reservation) are: the 80-seat Club Restaurant, with seating under a large glass dome beside the major pools; and Molecular Gastronomy, by a famed Italian chef. The two Samsara restaurants feature food prepared with reduced salt, fat and calories.

For casual eating, the lido deck buffet restaurant is a self-serve for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with afternoon pizzas and beverages. Specialty coffees, cakes and chocolates are available are various bars (at extra cost).

Entertainment
The ship is operated more as a floating resort than a traditional cruise vessel. The Athena Theatre, impressively spanning three decks, has a revolving stage, hydraulic orchestra pit, and superb sound. Live bands and musicians abound and dancing is the most popular pastime. The 4D Cinema combines 3D vision with amazing special effects. The giant poolside movie screen requires an admission fee and earphones to cater for the multiple languages. A popular event is the interactive passenger games held nightly.

The ship has four pools (two under sliding glass roofs, for adults), four whirlpools, and a waterslide extending over two decks. Amenities include an outdoor jogging track, a sports court, virtual golf, recording studio, a Grand Prix race car driving simulator, the 23,000ft² Samsara Spa, a gymnasium and health centre. The fitness facility is state of the art and there are daily classes for yoga, spinning and Pilates, each for a nominal fee. Squok Club with its multilingual staff caters for four age groups ranging from 3 to 17 years. A 24-hour arcade is located on Deck 5, next to the casino. The Internet cafe is located on Deck 4 and is staffed just a few hours daily.
