Was thrilled with Samantha as she managed to get 2 cabins next door to each other & exactly what we needed. P&O & a travel agency had both said there was no room. Very, very impressed & very grateful."

Life aboard Celebrity Xpedition
Celebrity Xpedition offers year-round 7-night cruises to the Galapagos Islands, straddling the equator off Ecuador. Travellers connect by air from Quito (additional to the cruise fare), 1300 km from Baltra Island, then embark on a 13-stop tour of the archipelago. There are actually two alternating itineraries that vary slightly in landing points. The ship revisits the ports-of-call of naturalist Charles Darwin. Snorkel equipment, wetsuits and binoculars are inclusive. All staterooms have ocean views, room service, comfortable bedding and bathrobes. Suites offer further luxuries. Fares include transfers, all gratuities, alcoholic drinks, and twice-daily shore excursions. Past guests average five-star ratings for the 7-night expedition. This is ecotourism for mature adults.

Entering service in 2001 at 2,842 GT and carrying just 98 passengers, Celebrity Xpedition offers guests very personalised attention. Her 2018 refurbishing included a range of enhancements across her suites, staterooms, & communal spaces. This smaller vessel permits access to ports unavailable to larger vessels. The main focus is on excursions on the islands, which are prefaced by naturalist-led evening presentations. The cruise is one of discovery, whether trekking on the islands or enjoying the water with the Zodiac excursion vessels. Travel cost is inclusive of tips and all drinks. She is Cruise Critic’s ‘best overall small ship’.

Accommodation
All cabins have an outside view. Deluxe and Ocean View staterooms are premium quality, with a picture window and twin beds convertible to a queen-size bed. All staterooms have interactive TV with DVD player, direct-dial telephones with voicemail, drinks table, vanity desk with hair dryer, mini-bar/refrigerator, controllable AC, personal safe, bathrobes and beach towels. Bathrooms have a good-sized shower area. Laundry service is available. Nine of the Suites have a convertible sofa to accommodate a third adult or two young children.

Some Suites (in four classes) have full-height glass doors leading to a private verandah with teak decking, teak-topped table and sit-up chairs. Suites come with many extras: for example, daily fruit and hors d’oeuvre, complimentary sparkling wine, and dinner with an officer. The Penthouse Suite is two Suites joined, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and two balconies. One suite has forward views. Two of the suites can be joined. Four Deluxe staterooms have upper berths. There are no single or wheelchair-accessible staterooms.

Food and Dining
Darwin’s Restaurant operates on an open-seating basis at 6 to 8 seat tables, with window views on one side. Buffet is offered at breakfast, with cooked-to-order eggs. Lunch offers a range of salads, meat and fish, and fresh bread. The evening meal is traditional, five-course, in Celebrity style. Dress is casual, but some like to dress up in the evening.

The alternative al fresco Beagle Grill offers burger and hot dog lunches with salad and fresh pizza. The Discovery Lounge and outdoor bar serves fruit juices, fresh fruit and finger-food around the clock. One evening you can expect an open BBQ, with formal table settings, along with wine, under the starry sky. Room service is available to all staterooms, and meals can range from toasted sandwiches to dishes from the main restaurant.

Entertainment
This is an expedition vessel, so most entertainment guests will find on land and sea explorations. On board dinner and after-dinner conversations will be your main entertainment. Daytime lectures and evening briefings will inform about wildlife. Recent film releases are available on in-cabin TVs. There are plenty of books and board games available.

On the top deck are comfortable sunbeds, whirlpool hot tub, showers and toilets. There is a small indoor gym, and mixed-sex sauna and shower. All tips and non-premium drinks are included in the fare. Crew members are mostly Equadorian, charming, and most obliging.
