I am amazed at how much Christie can remember about each ship, and she tells us where the best cabins are for the price we want to pay. She is extremely helpful and very pleasant to talk to. Love her."- Jenny O

Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
The Arctic is the current ‘in’ region for cruising, with nearly a million visitors each year. Svalbard Archipelago (Norway) and Greenland are very popular. The Arctic region (north of 66.56 deg.lat.) is an ocean surrounded by continents, north of where no trees grow, populated by polar bears, walruses, whales, seals and arctic birds. Ports in ‘the land of the midnight sun’ include those of northern continental Norway and its islands Bear Island and the Svalbard Archipelago; five ports in Greenland; and the Barents Sea ports and islands of NW Russia. Cruises operate around May to September.
Large ships with 1000 to 3000 passengers offer typically 12 to 18-night round-trip cruises out of northern European ports to the Arctic ports of continental Norway, Norway’s islands further north, and the northern ports of Russia. Choose from nine ships of seven cruise lines. The smaller vessels Ocean Princess, Azamara Journey, Crystal Symphony, Seabourn’s Legend and Quest, Seven Seas Voyager and Silver Cloud also cross the Arctic Circle.
Most outstanding is the sight of the Midnight Sun on most of these cruises. (To view the Northern Lights you’ll have to book on Oriana for March 2015.) Five vessels reach the furthest north for cruise ships, the Svalbard Archipelago (78 deg.lat.). The majority of cruises reach North Cape at the top of mainland Europe, on the fjord coastline of Norway. In June 2014 the luxury ship Silver Cloud (296 passengers) visits the Russian ports of Murmansk and the Solovetsky Islands, with their forts, museums and dark histories. Silver Explorer (132 passengers) is a luxury expedition vessel with Zodiacs enabling it to access small landing sites for serious exploration. In August/September 2013 she explores Hudson’s Bay, Greenland and Iceland, a pinnacle of exploration.

Featured Arctic - Atlantic Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Kangerlussuaq Kangerlussuaq (Danish: Søndre Strømfjord) is a settlement in western Greenland in the Qeqqata municipality, located at the head of a fjord of the same name, and just inside the Arctic Circle. The town lies between glacial-fed Qinnguata Kuussua river to the SE, fjord to the SW, and hills rising sharply to 400m to the north. Russell Glacier and the Greenland ice sheet lie about 22km further east. The town is situated about 190km inland from Davis Strait, at the head of the longest fjord in western Greenland. The fjord waters have a distinct emerald colouring for several kilometres from Kangerlussuaq due to alluvial sediments, and also quicksand plains. |

| Cruises from Honningsvag Honningsvåg, Norway, lies deep within the Arctic Circle at 71 deg.N. latitude, on the island Magerøya. Twenty-two km north of Honningsvåg is North Cape, the northernmost part of mainland Europe. Magerøya connects to the mainland via the 6.87km North Cape Tunnel. Honningsvåg is an ice-free port of call for cruise ships. The sky is illuminated by the midnight sun in summer and Aurora Borealis may appear in winter. The island has a silent, rugged beauty that surrounds you. Standing on the continent’s edge on the North Cape Plateau is quite an experience, reindeer roam freely on the hulking granite cliff rising from icy seas. |
|
| Cruises from Longyearbyen Longyearbyen lies on the river Longyearelva on the Norwegian Island of Spitsbergen high in the Arctic. It is the world’s northern-most town, as all settlements further north are research or meteorological outposts. The modern town, fringed by abandoned mining detritus, enjoys a superb backdrop including two glacier tongues, Longyearbreen and Lars Hjertabreen. The small community of about 2,000 has developed from being a mining community into a community with a number of businesses and industries and a wide range of cultural activities and opportunities. The main attraction is communing with nature where seals, walrus, polar bears, whales, and seabirds abound, and photographing the midnight sun. |
|
| Cruises from Tromsoe Tromsoe, the home of the famous Northern Lights, is situated a mere 2000 km from the North Pole, on the same latitude as Northern Siberia and Alaska. Most visitors are surprised by the prominence and sophistication of this fascinating port. On offer are high-quality theatre, arts and music, which contrast with the boundless and vast wilderness surrounding the city. The city centre contains the largest number of wooden houses in northern Norway as well as the oldest house. The Arctic Cathedral, a daring piece of architecture that symbolises the ice packs of the Arctic, provides an interesting contrast. |
