The Arctic welcomes around one million visitors annually. The Arctic region is an ocean surrounded by continents, bounded by Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia, and populated by polar bears, walruses, whales, seals and Arctic birds. Easiest access is by cruise to Norway (north of 66.56 deg.lat.): to 13 ports on the fjord-lined mainland, and six sites in the Svalbard Archipelago lying midway between mainland Europe and the North Pole. (Some vessels round North Cape and reach three sub-Arctic ports of Russia.) Recently, 17 ports lining Baffin Bay have drawn tourists, in West Greenland and Canada’s Nunavut islands. And now, with the retreat of seasonal sea ice, a dozen ports along the North-West Passage line the sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific. Other ports in ‘the land of the midnight sun’ include Norway’s Bear Island and Jan Mayen Island.

Large ships with 1000 to 3000 passengers offer typically 12 to 18-night round-trip cruises out of northern European ports to the Arctic ports of continental Norway, Norway’s islands further north, and the northern ports of Russia. Choose from a dozen ships of nine large cruise lines. The smaller upmarket vessels of Azamara, Crystal, Seabourn, Oceana, Ponant, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas all visit the Arctic; also, the new luxury larger ships Scenic Eclipse and Viking's Sun and Sea. Ponant’s L’Austral and Le Boreal specialise in polar regions.

From June through September stand on an outside deck at midnight and take selfies with the Sun low on the horizon. When the weather is ideal, view the Aurora Borealis. At least seven lines reach furthest north to Longyearbyen. Nautica and Seven Seas Navigator visit three sub-Arctic Russian ports. Arctic Greenland is on itineraries of MSC Orchestra, Scenic Eclipse, and Seabourn Quest. The specialists though are Ponant’s L’Austral and Le Boreal, which make serious explorations of Baffin Bay and the Northwest Passage. Also, a number of small luxury ships built to reach the Geographic North Pole will appear in the next two years.
