Cruises visiting Akaroa & all Akaroa cruises for  2020-2021

View Akaroa 2020-2021 cruises for 2 ships listing 5 cruises from Akaroa with today's best deals!

Just 85 kilometres from the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, is the quaint and beautiful French village of Akaroa. It is situated within Akaroa Harbour in the heart of an ancient volcano that is now the circular Banks Peninsula. French settlers arrived in 1840 just a few days after the peninsula was claimed for Britain. The French settlers were granted land, and their heritage is preserved in the town with its colonial architecture, quaint shops, craft stores, and cafes where beautiful gardens invite visitors to relax and enjoy delightful refreshments. Everywhere is sign-posted in French. Many streets have French names and descendants of the original French families still live there.

Stroll around town and buy some French souvenirs. Less than a kilometre walk from the jetty is the unique, elegant, and historic Giant’s House, with original artworks, designed and decorated in the French style. Stroll through the terraced gardens with their sculptures and mosaics. At the waterfront take in t he views of French Bay, perhaps find a secluded beach of your own in one of the neighbouring bays. From town there are highly recommended kayaking and Pohatu Penguin tours, the latter providing a great insight into the fantastic conservation work that is being done here. Take a scenic drive around the bay to the French Farm Winery on the western side of the harbour.

Banks Peninsula - an extinct volcano with its circular shape and steep sided hills that sweep down to beautiful inlets and bays below - provides incredible scenery as well as giving you the opportunity to view the Hectors dolphin, the world's smallest and rarest. Try the Harbour Cruises that provide the opportunity to see a seal colony, or swim with the dolphins in winter, wearing a dry suit, which really does keep you dry and warm. The ambience of the town makes you feel that you have been magically transported to France. This extension of France is an unexpected destination in New Zealand.
