Cruises visiting Magdalenefjord & all Magdalenefjord cruises for  2019-2020

View Magdalenefjord 2019-2020 cruises for 2 ships listing 10 cruises from Magdalenefjord with today's best deals!

Magdalenefjord lies on the NW corner of Spitsbergen, a Norwegian island and the largest in the Svalbard archipelago, situated in the Arctic Ocean. The fjord lies at 80 deg. north latitude, making it possibly the furthest north of all cruise ship destinations. It is large enough to accommodate even the largest of cruise ships which are even able to turn 180 degrees in the fjord. On the south shore of the fjord is the bay Gullybukta. Magdalenefjord offers spectacular scenery of sharply-peaked mountains on all sides and several glaciers. The harbour is dominated by the craggy, sharp-toothed Waggonway Glacier that stretches down into the fjord, creating a breathtaking panorama.

Keen photographers are eager to leave the ship to capture the spectacular sight. Those who go ashore to explore these unique landscapes have the opportunity to gain insights into the local community. They may also be able to visit the golden sands of Gravneset, one of the largest cemeteries of the whaling period dating from the 17th to the late 18th century. Nature lovers will be thrilled to catch a glimpse of polar bears and the occasional walrus, families of seals, and colonies of auks, geese and ducks. The lovely blue-green bay of Magdalenefjord is the most popular anchorage along Spitsbergen's western coast and is one of Svalbard's prettiest corners.

Known for its incredible beauty as well as its surround of rugged mountains and glaciers, sailing through the 8 km of stunning scenery is a truly awe-inspiring experience. What makes it really special is just how close visitors can get to the ice fronts and see layer after layer of compressed blue ice and massive ice caves down at sea level. Looking at the glaciers carefully one can see slight hints of colours, even greens, and be astonished to learn that they were caused by microbes living in the ice. Top tip: Don't expect too much, just let the place win you over by its magnificence.
