Renowned as a world class Bonefish adventure site, Christmas Island (Kiritimati) in the Republic of Kiribati – the local pronunciation of “Gilberts” – is the world's largest coral atoll in the northern Line Islands. (There’s another Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean south of Java.) Since 1995 Kiribati is the easternmost country in the world, and was the first country to enter the year 2000. The island has four populated villages, London being the main village and port facility. A large portion of Christmas Island is given over to a nature reserve to protect the marine turtles and several species of rare migratory birds, which stopover or even stay all winter, with the lagoon and salt flats being their prime locations.

Seabirds are plentiful, and there are growing numbers of other fascinating birds, such as the Sooty Terns, and the Christmas Island warbler. The island's vegetation is recuperating from nuclear testing and is now home to an interesting range of shrubs and grasslands. Diving to explore the coral and colourful fish along the reef edges, as well as snorkelling the clear warm waters of the lagoons, can be arranged. You could simply wind down and relax, and enjoy living on island time, or join in some fishing, as there is an abundance to be found in both the lagoons and the ocean.

Christmas Island, with its consistent year-round comfortable weather, was named by its ‘discoverer’ Captain James Cook on Christmas Eve in 1777. Christmas became Kiritimati (pronounced roughly "kee-rees-mass") in the local Gilbertese language. Because of its position just west of the International Date Line, Kiritimati is the first inhabited island to begin each new day and year, and attracted tourism to celebrate that. The entire island is a wildlife sanctuary, with five areas that require permission to visit.
