Cruising in Alaska
Alaska is regarded as one of the most scenic cruising regions on earth, and with good reason. With towering mountain ranges, crystalline glaciers and abundant wildlife you'll fill up your camera memory in no time!

There are also many options for where to start your Alaska cruise. Leaving from Seattle to Vancouver means you'll get to see parts of the Canada coast as you sail north; however, if it's a seven-night cruise your itinerary may then include more days at sea and less time in port.

Leaving out of Seward, Alaska, for a week long cruise usually includes ports of call most days. Multiple week cruises in Alaska offer a variety of options for where to sail out of and what ports to see, allowing you to see many components of the cruising world of Alaska.

When it comes to the time of year to take a cruise in Alaska, you're at the whim of Mother Nature. Due to the cold winters, cruises to Alaska are only available from the end of April through beginning of October. Not only is this the safest time for the cruise ships to sail to avoid any ice that may form on the water passageways, it also is the time cruisers can most enjoy being on deck of the ship and exploring each port as the weather is much warmer than in the frigid winter months.

Even in summer, though, you'll want to pack warm layers, such as sweaters and windbreakers. The nights in Alaska can get cold plus being on the water can result in chilly breezes. Also pack clothes you're not afraid to get dirty. Many of the most popular shore excursions and activities to do while in port involve hiking, fishing and canoeing.

From May to September larger vessels (1400 to 2400 passengers) from Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America Line, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian Cruise Line have 24 vessels cruising this coastline. Two luxury smaller vessels (around 400 passengers) visiting Alaska are Silver Shadow and Seven Seas Navigator. Most cruises are of 7 nights, but range up to 14 nights. Choose a round-trip cruise (from Vancouver/Seattle/San Francisco), or one way (either northbound or southbound, with the northern port Anchorage or Seward). Carnival Imagination and Carnival Inspiration make regular 3- and 4-night cruises along the coast of California between Los Angeles and Ensenada (Mexico).

Many family friendly cruise lines sail to Alaska, offering an opportunity for parents to show their children Alaska while still ensuring they won't be bored while on the ship during time at sea. Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line are all great cruise line options that offer activities on board to entertain both children and adults.

Those traveling with teenagers or as a couple may enjoy the premium cruise lines that offer a sophisticated ambiance on board while still offering a variety of entertainment options. Princess Cruises, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises offer excellent itineraries to Alaska that are ideal for this style cruising.

Popular Ports to visit:
Juneau
Built on a narrow shelf between Mt. Juneau and the deep waters of Gastineau Channel, Juneau is Alaska's state capital and a rewarding destination for glacier viewing. Juneau is a blend of fishermen and teachers, legislators and artists, homemakers and lawyers, union workers and frontier entrepreneurs, students and Native elders, all sharing an active port city within an inspiring wilderness setting.

Visitors often take the Mount Roberts Tramway, an aerial tramway, that takes them from the cruise ship docks up to the SW ridge of Mount Roberts, providing great scenic views of Juneau and the Gastineau Channel. Twenty kilometres out of town is the Mendenhall glacier, a must-see.

Ketchikan
Alaska’s ‘first city’ Ketchikan is situated along the shores of Alaska's Inside Passage within the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Evergreen mountains rise out of the water, the lush green landscape nurtured by the abundant rainfall of the temperate rainforest environment.

Visitors are presented with a remarkable array of activities and attractions that highlight the town's history, industry and culture, and bring them up close to resident wildlife. Ketchikan’s impressive variety of shops and galleries feature work by many of the island’s resident artists as well as an assortment of souvenir items and unique gifts that make shopping a ‘must-do’.

Inside Passage

The Inside Passage is a coastal route for ocean-going vessels along a network of passages that weave through the islands on the Pacific coast of North America. The route extends from southeastern Alaska in the United States, through western British Columbia in Canada, to northwestern Washington State in the USA.

Ships using the route can avoid some of the bad weather in the open ocean and may visit some of the many isolated communities along the route. Carved by glaciers and blanketed with majestic hemlock and spruce, the Passage is a region of pristine water, snow-capped mountains, deep fjords and forested islands.

Anchorage/Whittier
Ships call at the ports of Seward and Whittier on the SE coast of Alaska as gateways to Anchorage, which is home to almost half the population of Alaska. What better way to see Alaska than taking the impressive train ride from Seward to Anchorage. You'll see wild animals, beautiful scenery, and enjoy a great meal in the diner car.

On arrival be sure to visit the historical Alaska Railroad depot and walk the streets to discover interesting restaurants and a great range of stores (such as Modern Dwellers), and meet very friendly locals. Set alongside magnificent scenery, Anchorage is an unforgettable destination.

With 7 of our team having cruise Alaska themselves, we can happily assist with not only your cruise but also your flights, tours, sightseeing and more. For more details on Cruising in Alaska, please call one of our team on 1800 121 187 today.
