New Ports for 2015/16

New Cruise Ports for 2015/16
With the release of new itineraries comes the exciting prospect of new ports. Many of the ports in P&O's 2015/16 cruise release were previously only available to luxury expedition ships at a 5 star price. They have now become more accessible and affordable for many Australians to visit.

This week we feature 4 of the new and interesting destinations.

Gizo Island, Solomon Islands
Gizo is the capital of the Western Province in the Solomon Islands, situated on Gizo Island, approximately 380 km WNW of the capital Honiara, and is the second largest town in the country.

Gizo is a tourism centre with great trips available. Take a tour for a full day of exciting diving with specialists, and you will investigate WWII wrecks and reefs that have some of the highest fish counts in the world.

Also on offer are tours of WWII sites, bird watching, snorkelling, surf drops, game fishing, as well as village tours. Enjoy the local resorts, restaurants, and relax with the local shopping opportunities.

Gizo, Solomon Island

Probolinggo, Indonesia
Probolinggo is a city on the north coast of East Java, Indonesia, a 1.5 km walk south of the port. Its harbour, on the Java Sea, is used heavily by brightly coloured fishing vessels.

When in port, engage a jeep or private minibus to take you for a 90 minutes’ drive to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. Here is located Mt Bromo that is considered to be the most famous volcano in Indonesia.

Though the best time to view Bromo is at sunrise, the landscape is so dramatic it is a definite ‘must-see’. While in the park visit the Madakaripura Waterfall. Then there’s the Jabung Temple just 26 km east of Probolinggo. This is an interesting red brick Buddhist funerary shrine completed in 1354.

Probolinggo, Indonesia
Nomuka Island, Tonga
Nomuka is a small island in the Ha’apai group of islands in the Kingdom of Tonga, South Pacific Ocean. It has a population of around 400 inhabitants.

The triangular island, with its large circular brackish lake in the middle, has been visited by Abel Tasman (who named it Rotterdam Island in 1643), Captain Cook (for fresh water in the 1770s), and Captain Bligh (one day before the famous mutiny on the Bounty in 1789).

The island is beautiful, with white sandy beaches, a little spoken English, and friendly Tongans. The island is mostly bushland with patches of green down to the ocean. There is also the opportunity to relax on the beaches or engage in kayaking and snorkelling.

Nomuka Island, Tonga

Kitava, Papua New Guinea
Kitava Island is one of the Trobriand Islands (aka the Kiriwina Islands), an archipelago of coral atolls off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea in Milne Bay Province. To the west lies the main island and administrative centre of Kiriwina.

The archipelago is considered to be an important tropical rainforest ecoregion in need of conservation. The Trobriander Islanders produce some of the most detailed and sought-after ebony carvings and artifacts in the Massim region.

They have a culture which traces family lineage through mothers rather than fathers, have unusual customs, such as eating privately, or turning their backs on each another and eating quickly so as not to be observed.

Cricket was introduced in 1903 by a missionary with the hope of reducing tribal rivalry and fighting. Today they play a very different game with 40 or more players, with dances and chanting, modified bats and balls and the home team is always the winner!

Kitava, Papua New Guinea

If you would like to experience one of these ports or have any questions about any new itineraries, call our team on 1800 121 187.
