Holland America Line

Holland America Line
Founded more than a century ago in the Netherlands, Holland America Line works its Dutch heritage into the design of its ships and into the elegant but affordable cruise experience it offers. Holland America Line is British-American owned, with head office in Seattle, and one of ten cruise line subsidiaries of Carnival Corporation. Holland America's 15 ships, with dark blue hull and white superstructure, bear the suffix '-dam', after dams on rivers in the Netherlands, and the four points on the compass. Itineraries circle the globe visiting over 354 ports in 98 countries and seven continents.

Holland America Line's ships are named for classic vessels in the cruise line's history (Rotterdam, for example, is the sixth Holland America Line ship to bear that name). Large paintings of old Holland America ships hang in the stairways, and floral themes, ship memorabilia, antiques and Indonesian touches (the Asian country being a former Dutch colony) all provide a subtle link to the line's heritage.

HAL's ships are of two types: larger vessels, best suited to younger families with children, and smaller less glitzy ships for older and repeat passengers. All the ships are well maintained and crewed by academy-trained, polite and smiling Indonesians and Filipinos – and much of the décor is focused on Dutch/Indonesian artefacts of the 16th and 17th centuries. HAL has the right touches for seniors and retirees – friendly staff, flowers everywhere, sea-going traditions, alternative dining, and personal enrichment programs.

Holland America Line has one of the highest rates of repeat guests in the industry. This premium cruise line continues to undergo "Signature of Excellence" enhancements that cover services, dining, accommodations, public rooms, and amenities. Vessels have a built-in cinema, and operate many theme-related cruises, "University at Sea" lectures, and full-demonstration kitchens for its "Culinary Arts" program.

Holland America Line organises excellent onshore tours, bookable before and during each cruise. Recent accolades include: the prestigious Five Star Diamond Award from The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences; Best Overall Cruise Value from World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society members, for the 18th consecutive year; and Ethics Inside Certification from the Ethisphere Institute, an international think tank dedicated to the research and promotion of best practices in corporate ethics and compliance.

Over the course of the company's long history, first as a cargo- and passenger-shipping carrier, and subsequently a leisure-cruise line, Holland America Line has carried more than millions of passengers from Europe to the New World and to vacation destinations across the globe.

Volendam
The Volendam underwent an extensive refit in 2005 & had many added many features. In December she sails via the Great Barrier Reef to Singapore and Hong Kong (30 nights). In 2013 she length of the countries of SE Asia and the Far East. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities.

Cabins
Cabins are spacious and come highly recommended. All include twin/queen bed with excellent bedding, sofa, flat-screen TV running movies, DVD player, fruit by order, bathrobes, hairdryers, make-up mirrors, kit of personal toiletries, shower tubs (only showers for inside cabins), personal safe and various services. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. There are 23 cabins that are wheelchair-accessible.

Dining
The ship has a variety of dining areas, from formal to casual. The two-deck Rotterdam Dining Room, at the rear of the ship with its grand staircase and views on three sides, serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating. The alternative restaurant The Pinnacle Grill is well worth the additional cover charge, with meals served in most elegant settings. The Lido deck Canaletto opens for dinner only, and offers a menu of familiar Italian dishes. Additionally there are pool-side burgers, hot dogs, Mexican food, and a coffee bar.

Entertainment
At night the two-deck Showroom At Sea offers (twice nightly) musical productions & there's lots of live music & dancing in the Ocean Bar. Sip drinks from the upper deck Crow's Nest Lounge with its wrap-around views of the ship's progress, while by night it turns into a nightclub. Evening entertainment includes the casino and eight different bars.

By day there are Bridge, Bingo, trivia games, Sudoku, cooking demos & movies. Book early for the for-fee culinary workshops & wine tastings in the Wayang Theatre and Culinary Arts Centre. The fresh-water Lido deck pool, flanked by two hot tubs, has a retractable cover. The aft pool resort area the Retreat is a place to lounge with a slice of pizza. The Greenhouse Spa and Salon includes sauna, steam rooms, treatment rooms, and a fully-equipped gymnasium with circuit-training and finess classes. There are also courts and a jogging course. Children are catered for at Club HAL with supervised activities, and teens socialise at The Loft.
