Featured Region - South Pacific

South Pacific Cruising

Cruises visit the island groups of Melanesia (New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji) and Polynesia (Samoa, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, French Polynesia/Tahiti and Pitcairn Island). Melanesia's islands are mostly high volcanic, while Polynesia's islands are low reefs and atolls.

Popular activities on shore are market-shopping, water sports, and taking in the stunning views. These islands hold a fascination for city-dwellers, who envy the carefreeness of island life and culture. The growth of South Pacific cruising gives the traveller a wealth of choices! Since there are many sea days with larger vessels, select a ship with on-board activities that suit your lifestyle.

Noumea, New Caledonia
The city maintains much of New Caledonia's unique mix of French and old Melanesian culture, while the U.S. wartime military influence lingers. This is evidenced both in the warmth that many New Caledonian people feel towards the U.S., as well as some of the very 'American' names of several of the quarters of the city. Noumea has excellent museums, restaurants, designer boutiques, markets and shopping areas, which you are sure to enjoy, here in the Paris of the Pacific.

Port Vila, Vanuatu
There are fantastic places to see, and a great option is to hire a taxi for the day by bargaining vigorously, and paying at the end of the day. Then visit some of the following - Cascade Waterfalls (just the lower parts of the falls are scenic enough), Hideaway Island (to snorkel directly off the beach and feed the fish), take a sea-plane ride and enjoy magnificent views, go horse riding in beautiful rainforests, learn sailing in a shallow lagoon, but above all else take the time to meet and mix with the delightful local people.

Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu
The island is possibly best known for its renowned diving and snorkelling spot, Million Dollar Point, where visitors can 'feel' the US and Allied forces presence from WWII. This 'equipment grave', including tractors, aeroplanes and millions of 7-Up and Coca-Cola bottles lined up on the seabed, makes for an unforgettable experience. There are also many reefs and beautiful beaches to enjoy. The main road is home to interesting shopping at 'all-in-one' stores as well as tourist boutiques, crafts markets, local restaurants, and friendly faces.

Isle of Pines, New Caledonia

Escorted tours are readily available or you can hire a car and explore for yourself. You might enjoy horse-riding in the forest or, indeed, along the water's edge. Visit the Reine Hortense Caves, which according to legend was the retreat of Queen Hortense during tribal wars, or climb the picturesque 260 m N'ga Peak, from which you can see the whole island and surrounding islets. You could possibly catch a game of Le Cricket, played mainly by women, or even organise your own match. With something for everyone, it is not surprising that the Isle of Pines is often nicknamed 'the closest island to Paradise'!

Emerald Bay, New Caledonia
If possible, visit the nearby Divine Island where you can stroll along the long, white, beaches lined with swaying palm trees, and, perhaps even have a game of beach volleyball! There is also a track that gives easy access to the beaches on the other side of the island. You can walk around the island in less than 3 hours. Inland there are palm trees, evergreen trees and shrubs. A short stroll up the hill to the lookout will reward you with stunning views of Emerald Bay, more islands and sweeping vistas of the beaches.

Suva, Fiji
Hire a taxi for the day or take a tour and enjoy its tall modern buildings which are beautifully balanced by rich traditional colonial architecture. Landmarks worth visiting include well-known landmarks such as, Suva City Library, Government House – the official residence of the President, and the largest University in the South Pacific Islands. Numerous parks, such as Thurston Gardens - which houses the fascinating Fiji Museum, the new Takashi Suzuki Garden, and Apted Park at Suva Point, emphasise its beauty.

Savusavu, Fiji
Of special interest is the site of the geothermal hot springs, just a short walk up the hill behind the Morris Hedstrom Supermarket, where, in the afternoons, you can see pots of root crops steaming atop the springs. Be sure to check out the new Tourist Info Spot located at the Cafe Bula Re, opposite the Post Office for more information on local activities and attractions. It truly is a delightful visit to times passed by at Savusavu, Fiji's Hidden Paradise!
