Take a cruise with a difference

They say you often learn most about a person (or in this case a company) in times of trouble, and this week we've seen the extremely positive reaction from Azamara Club Cruises following the unfortunate incident over the weekend onboard Quest. One of our own Cruise Masters, Martine Hero, was onboard Azamara Quest and along with other passengers, has confirmed how well the crew and management from Azamara Club Cruises have handled the situation.

In other news, Celebrity Solstice has announced some fantastic airfares to tie in with their New Zealand cruises this Summer, and Holland America Line is showing its love for Australia by sending Oosterdam and Volendam down for a few months also. Book in early for the best pick of cabins and prices!

Featured Cruiseline - Holland America Cruises

Holland America Oosterdam

MS Oosterdam is one of four ‘compass-point’ HAL ships. Until September 2012 she makes 7-night cruises of the Alaskan fjord coast ex Seattle. From late October 2012 through March 2013 Oosterdam is based in Sydney, Australia, where HAL is expanding its offices and operations. Cruises travel to New Zealand, islands of the South Pacific, the Great Barrier Reef. In April 2013 she returns to Vancouver and the Alaskan coast. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities.

Accommodation
Of the staterooms, 85% have an outside view, and of these four-fifths have a private balcony. Cabins have twice-daily housekeeping, nightly turn-down service, complimentary shoe-shine and ice service. Standard cabins having a third and fourth pull-down berth or trundle bed are a little small if occupied by three or, four persons. Cabins are spacious and come highly recommended.

All include twin/queen bed with excellent bedding, sofa, flat-screen TV running movies, DVD player, fruit by order, bathrobes, hairdryers, make-up mirrors, kit of personal toiletries, shower tubs (only showers for inside cabins), personal safe and various services. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. There are no single cabins, and 23 that are wheelchair-accessible.

Food and Dining
The ship has seven formal to casual dining areas. The two-deck main Dining Room serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating on the upper deck. The Master Chef's menus are superb, and waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. There are two alternative restaurants, all best to reserve in advance: The Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, and the (no service charge) Italian-American-influenced Canaletto.

The Lido Restaurant has multiple serving stations varying their offerings throughout the day and late evening. The casual Terrace Grill serves all the types of fast food you'd expect. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper.

Entertainment
At night Las Vegas-style revues are held at the two-deck-high Show Lounge. View movies in the Screening Room. Join in games in the Queen's Lounge. And there's dancing and music all over the ship: sing along at the Piano Bar, dance in the Ocean Bar or the ship's disco Northern Lights, or watch sport in the multi-screen sports bar. The casino is large.

During the day there are four options: well-organised shore excursions; the Culinary Arts Centre with cooking activities; the Digital Workshop that includes photography and making a vacation video; and Mind, Body, Spirit that focuses on fitness, recreation and brain stimulation games. The main pool is one of the most beautiful at sea. For a poolside retreat reserve a day-long private cabana, especially suited to families. The giant Greenhouse Spa includes a range of thermal suites, and gymnasium with circuit-training and fitness classes. Sports include basketball, volleyball and a golf simulation. Children are catered for at Club HAL (for ages 3-7 and 8-12), and teens socialise at The Loft and The Oasis.

In the northern Summer Volendam sails the Alaska Inside Passage ex Vancouver. In September 2012 she crosses the Pacific for southern Summer cruises around Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand. In October/November circumnavigate Australia ex Sydney. In December Volendam sails via the Great Barrier Reef to Singapore and Hong Kong (30 nights). In 2013 she length of the countries of SE Asia and the Far East. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities.

For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating. Waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. The alternative restaurant The Pinnacle Grill is well worth the additional cover charge, with meals served in most elegant settings. The Lido deck Canaletto opens for dinner only, and offers a menu of familiar Italian dishes.

The Lido Restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, has two serving lines during the day offering food cooked à la minute, and at night opens as a popular and casual bistro. Outside meal times it serves sandwiches, ice cream, and special late-night offerings. Additionally there are pool-side burgers, hot dogs, Mexican food, and a coffee bar. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper. The Lido deck Canaletto opens for dinner only, and offers a menu of familiar Italian dishes.

Entertainment
At night the two-deck Showroom At Sea offers (twice nightly) musical productions, cabaret, and its features include three video screens. There's lots of live music and dancing in the Ocean Bar, and around the three bars in the Mix. Sip drinks from the upper deck Crow's Nest Lounge with its wrap-around views of the ship's progress, while by night it turns into a nightclub. Evening entertainment includes the casino and eight different bars.

By day there are Bridge, Bingo, trivia games, Sudoku, cooking demos, movies and the like. Book early for the for-fee culinary workshops and wine tastings in the Wayang Theatre and Culinary Arts Centre. The fresh-water Lido deck pool, flanked by two hot tubs, has a retractable cover. The aft pool resort area the Retreat is a place to lounge with a slice of pizza. The Greenhouse Spa and Salon includes sauna, steam rooms, treatment rooms, and a fully-equipped gymnasium with circuit-training and finess classes. There are also courts and a jogging course. Children are catered for at Club HAL with supervised activities, and teens socialise at The Loft.
