Orion II's Untouched Asia

Orion II - Final Season - don't miss out!

Orion II has had a short and adventurous life with Orion Expeditions, and sadly is leaving service at the end of 2012. In her final 6 months she continues exploring little known parts of Asia including the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia's Far East, the tranquil inland Sea of Japan, the Philippines, extensive explorations of Borneo (Kalimantan, the home of orang-utans), Komodo Island of dragon fame, and eight voyages to fascinating Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia (including the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh, and a visit to Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument).

All suites and staterooms are exterior and feature a sitting area or living room, hand-crafted cabinetry, AC, TV, DVD/ CD player, Internet access, mini-refrigerator, safe deposit box, marble vanities (with fluffy towels and robes) and teak floor, ample closet space, twin beds that can be converted to a queen-size bed, and 24-hour room service. Whatever accommodation guests choose, the facilities are top rate. The adventure cruises are not suited to children and wheelchair-dependency.

MV Orion II follows the Orion mould. Dine buffet for breakfast and lunch at the Outdoor Café, and à la carte dinners served at a single open seating in the Golden Star Restaurant. The dining room has14 tables for six or eight, all lit by a series of portholes. Guests may choose when and with whom they dine. Menus created by Serge Dansereau of ‘The Bathers’ Pavilion’ fame, features produce and flavours of the regions visited. The cuisine is extremely good and varied. The wine list draws from familiar and lesser-known wineries of Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Expect a dining atmosphere that is relaxed yet sophisticated.

There is no formal entertainment, apart from a small number of musical soloists who play background music and host the daily team-trivia game. Lectures by the expedition staff in the Leda Lounge (along with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres) review the day's activities, with a video or Power Point presentation. During the day lectures are presented by specialists, about marine or plant biology, and give very informative insights into the regions visited.

With two marginally different itineraries exploring the Russian Far East, Orion II allows guests to see parts of the world explored by very few. Filled with many different types of volcanos, stunning lakes and rural villages, the Far East offers many diverse experiences.

From Russia to Hokkaido in Northern Japan, guests see how the native Japanese have lived for centuries, relying on fishing and farming for their livelihoods, in stark contrast to Kushiro, a large commercial city in Eastern Hokkaido.

Orion II allows access into many beautiful remotes areas that larger vessels can't get to. Take advantage of these unusual itineraries while they are available.

Beginning in Kobe, this cruise explores Japan's stunning and historically remarkable cities, including Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the popular Shrine Island, Itsukushima. From Japan, guests spend several days through South Korea, stopping in Pusan and Cheju before sailing up the Yangtze River in China, overnighting in Nanjing before sailing back to Shanghai, where again an overnight stay allows guests to experience this amazing metropolis.

Departing Shanghai on 11 July 2012, Orion II makes her way to Kyushu in Japan, seeing the active volcano Sakurajima in Kagoshima, before heading south to Okinawa, in the Ryuku Islands. After visiting the remote islands of Southern Japan and it's thriving cultures, travellers then venture to Taipei for a day in port, then south to the beautiful islands of the Philippines for 5 days.

This cruise explores the diversity of the region, from military bases to stunning reefs for Scuba diving, to cities steeped in Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese history.

Call us to book one of these or many other Orion II journeys on 1800 121 187.
