Cruise ships berthed at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) access sweeping views of the harbour, Opera House, CBD, Circular Quay ferry terminal, and Sydney Harbour Bridge – all within a few minutes’ walk. The White Bay Cruise Terminal for mid-sized vessels that can pass under the Bridge docks two cruise ships. White Bay is 30 minutes’ drive by taxi or shuttle bus from the CBD and Central Station, or take a ferry from Circular Quay (am) or Darling Harbour (pm) on cruise days. Long term car parking is not too far away from each terminal. During the crowded summer season cruise ships occasionally tender passengers from Athol Buoy and Point Piper Buoy. QM2 has docked at Garden Island Naval Base. more info

A top-ten city in Lonely Planet's 'Best in Travel 2011' guide, Newcastle, surrounded by eight beaches, is situated 162 km N of Sydney at the mouth of the Hunter River. Presently the largest coal exporting harbour in the world, it is also an elegant and attractive city, full of historic buildings and interesting walks. Make sure you take note of the Historic Markers in the CBD as they are integral to the many walks that take you to fascinating places. These include the oldest theatre district in Australia, the Former Police Station that has been beautifully restored, the Coal Mining Monument that was once hit by shells from a Japanese submarine, and the lighthouse on the artificial promontory. more info

Approaching Brisbane River via beautiful Moreton Bay is a scenic delight. The most commonly used Portside Wharf Cruise Terminal is 14 km up-river and 6 km from the CBD, but only accessible to ships that clear the twin Gateway Bridges and less than 270m in length. Regular users of this terminal are P&O Australia and Princess vessels. They sail to the South Pacific, Great Barrier Reef, New Zealand, and PNG. Larger cruise ships berth at the commercial Port of Brisbane (Fisherman Island) at the river mouth, 25 km from the CBD. Smaller ships also berth here when Portside is fully booked. The new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal on the north side of the river mouth will open October 2020. It will berth the world's largest cruise ships. more info

Airlie Beach is a coastal town in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, Australia. It is a major hub for daytrips to the Whitsunday islands, on the world famous Great Barrier Reef. So visit the islands. Hayman and North Molle are visible from Airlie and if you make it down to Shute Harbour then Daydream, South Molle and Long Islands are just 15 minutes away by ferry. Airlie Beach township itself is a delightful tourist destination. As the sea is inhabited by marine stingers from November to May, the town has its own artificial lagoon, 200m by 50m, with a bridge and delightful surrounds. Life guards oversee the lagoon day and night. more info

Townsville is a city on the NE coast of Queensland, Australia. Adjacent to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef, the city has direct access to the beach. It lies in the dry tropics region, with old gold mining towns, rainforest waterfalls and a relaxed Queensland ambience that add up to 'life in Townsville'. A couple of notable 'must-dos' include viewing the city and Magnetic Island from Castle Hill that overlooks the CBD. Many also visit the preserved World War II bunkers on Castle Hill. Take a stroll along The Strand, the city's beach-front promenade. Stroll by cafes and shops in the mall, and perhaps visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland with its fascinating relics. more info

Cairns, located on the warm waters of Trinity Bay, 400km south of the northernmost tip of Queensland, is the gateway to the Tropical North. The Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal (a $120M upgrade opens early 2020, for ships to 300m) is a few minutes’ walk from the heart of town. Nearby are the Great Barrier Reef (90 min. by boat) and the Daintree National Park. The city itself has several theme parks that offer an overview of its natural surroundings. These include: Rainforestation Nature Park, Tjaipukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This is a gondola cableway over the rainforest canopy, between Cairns and Kuranda, offering unsurpassed views of ravines and waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. more info

Thursday Island, or 'T.I.' as it's usually known, is the name of the island and the town that is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Islands. The island group is off the far north Queensland mainland in Torres Strait, just 39 km north of Cape York Peninsula. The lucrative pearling industry founded in 1885 attracted workers from around Asia, particularly South Pacific Islanders, and this has resulted in a fascinating cultural mosaic. Green Fort Hill provides views over the town of Thursday Island, and provides fascinating insights into the local history that dates back to 1880 when it acted as the defence centre for Australia. The gun emplacements are still there and the magazines below have been converted to a very interesting museum. more info

Komodo Island may be closed to visitors throughout 2020, following which numbers may be limited to 5000 annually. The decision will be made in mid 2019. Komodo Island lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by Conservation International as a global conservation priority area, and is located in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago between the islands of Sumbawa to the west and Flores to the east. It makes up part of the Komodo National Park that consists of generally young, oceanic volcanic islands that are constantly rising, eroding and subsiding in the sea. While the park is mostly a diving destination, with visitors from around the world, another attraction here is its incredible nature. So go trekking the Island’s hills and the Kelimutu Volcano, explore the Python cave, or enjoy snorkelling on a day trip cruise. more info

Lembar is a port in Tawun Harbour on the island of Lombok, located 100 km E of Bali in Indonesia. The island has been promoted as "an unspoiled Bali" for quite some time, with beautiful beaches and the large, looming volcano of Mount Rinjan (3600m). In Lembar are idyllic conditions for snorkelling amongst pretty coral formations and many colourful fish, swimming, or just relaxing on the island's white sandy beach. Traditional fishing boats known as perahu with their twin outriggers and floating fishing houses are features of the surrounding waters. Lembar certainly provides a delightful, restful, but fascinating stop-over. more info

Activities on offer include white water rafting, jungle trekking, river kayaking, mountain cycling and scuba diving. Viking Orion Overview

Every southern summer Viking Orion sails out of Sydney and Auckland., offering cruises with the world’s most modern Line, with all-inclusive fares, and an upper-premium experience. Viking Orion arrives in Australia from SE Asia every year for a four month season (November to February), running 15-night cruises (with only four sea days) each way between Sydney and Auckland. Departing March each year, there’s a grand voyage from Auckland via Sydney, SE and E Asia, to Vancouver, over 92 nights. (Many sectors are available.) Food and Dining

Viking specialises on destination-focused dining, while still offering traditional Western menus. Of the 10 dining venues, The Restaurant seats 284 and serves three full meals changing daily. The menu includes regional cuisine and always-available American classics enhanced with locally sourced ingredients. Alcoholic drinks are inclusive at all meals. The glassed-in dining room opens to the promenade and views of passing scenery. All tables are for six persons. There are three alternative restaurants. At Manfredi’s Italian chianti by the carafe, freshly prepared pastas and generous antipasto are accompanied by fresh seafood. At The Chef’s Table sommeliers and culinary masters create the perfect pairing of food and wine during a multicourse tasting.
