Cruise ships dock 4 km from the Melbourne CBD at Station Pier, Port Melbourne, in Port Phillip Bay. Trams commute to the city centre, and a regular coach service links the railway station with Tullamarine Airport (with long-term parking). Station Pier is also the terminal for Spirit of Tasmania, a passenger-vehicular vessel that crosses Bass Strait to Tasmania. The Pier is closed to the general public during cruise ship visits. There is limited short-term parking at Waterfront Place nearby. Smaller (and occasional larger) cruise ships also dock SW of the city at Geelong (75 km) and SE of the city at Phillip Island (78 km). more info

Hobart, the capital and major seaport of Tasmania, lies on the estuary of the Derwent River, with Mount Wellington dominating the skyline in spectacular glory. Founded in 1803 as a British penal colony, it is one of Australia's oldest cities and serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations. A city of contrasts, there is much to see and do. At Woodbridge you can discover all the undersea world has to offer at the Marine Discovery Centre, or take a ferry from Kettering to beautiful Bruny Island, with its rainforest and wetland areas, sandy beaches and native wildlife. Dunedin is the principal city of the Otago Region of New Zealand. It was founded in 1848 by Scottish migrants, and today the city still contains many Scottish relics, including a statue of the Scottish Bard Robbie Burns. Fine examples of working heritage include the Speight’s Brewery, the Gasworks Museum and the very popular Taieri Gorge Railway. Then there are the standout Victorian and Edwardian buildings like First Church and Dunedin Railway Station, as well as the stately homes such as Larnach Castle and Olveston. Christchurch, in the Province of Canterbury, is the largest city of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located mid-way down the island's east coast just north of Banks Peninsula, on the edge of the Canterbury Plains. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with exciting festivals, theatre, modern art galleries, great shopping and award-winning attractions. Christchurch was a planned settlement founded by English colonialists, and this rich English history is still apparent in the city's atmosphere. The February 2011 Christchurch earthquake was a powerful natural event that severely damaged New Zealand’s second-largest city, killing 185 people in one of the nation’s deadliest peace-time disasters. more info

Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, is situated on the SW tip of the North Island, and is set on the edge of a stunning harbour surrounded by rolling hills. As the political centre of New Zealand, it houses Parliamentary buildings as well as the bulk of foreign diplomatic missions. However, it is also renowned for its cafe-culture, as there are more cafes per capita than in New York City, and they rival the world’s top culinary destinations for flavour and variety. The city’s world-class film industry attracts many visitors who are taken by expert tour operators to locations of several famous movies (e.g. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogies). Napier is a port city in Hawkes Bay on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is known as the 'Art Deco' capital of the world because following the earthquake which almost levelled the city in 1931 the rapid rebuilding was strongly influenced by Art Deco architecture. The building style of clean simple lines and bas-relief decoration was not only at its height of popularity, it also suited the needs of the city. It is now maintained by the Art Deco Trust. Rotorua (Tauranga) is a centre of tourism and a place of extraordinary natural beauty. The entire area is thermally active, and the smell of sulphur, a 'rotten eggs’ smell that is never far, results in the nicknames 'Sulphur City' and 'Rottenrua'. Viking Orion Overview

Every southern summer Viking Orion sails out of Sydney and Auckland., offering cruises with the world’s most modern Line, with all-inclusive fares, and an upper-premium experience. Viking Orion arrives in Australia from SE Asia every year for a four month season (November to February), running 15-night cruises (with only four sea days) each way between Sydney and Auckland. Departing March each year, there’s a grand voyage from Auckland via Sydney, SE and E Asia, to Vancouver, over 92 nights. (Many sectors are available.) From May to August annually 11-night cruises sail each way between Vancouver and Anchorage, for scenic viewing of the Alaskan fjord-lined coast. Again, after cruising the Alaskan coast for a season, Viking Orion returns via the Orient and Indonesia to Sydney. Note that at each port the fare includes at least one free tour. Food and Dining

Viking specialises on destination-focused dining, while still offering traditional Western menus. Of the 10 dining venues, The Restaurant seats 284 and serves three full meals changing daily. The menu includes regional cuisine and always-available American classics enhanced with locally sourced ingredients. Alcoholic drinks are inclusive at all meals. The glassed-in dining room opens to the promenade and views of passing scenery. All tables are for six persons. There are three alternative restaurants. At Manfredi’s Italian chianti by the carafe, freshly prepared pastas and generous antipasto are accompanied by fresh seafood. At The Chef’s Table sommeliers and culinary masters create the perfect pairing of food and wine during a multicourse tasting.
