L'Austral Overview

From mid-September L’Austral sails in six stages down the Pacific coast of the Americas to Ushuaia at the southern tip of South America: past heritage the old Inca Empire sites, Valparaiso, glacier-lined passages of Patagonia, and a scenic cruise to Cape Horn. From mid-November 2019 runs 9- to 16-night cruises from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula. Some cruises from there cross the Antarctic Circle, each adventure governed by local weather and ice conditions. In March 2020 L’Austral heads north in the Atlantic, with interesting forays into African islands and the British Isles, to Norway’s Spitzbergen Archipelago above the Arctic Circle. Depart June 2020 from Spitzbergen to Greenland for two weeks of magnificent scenery – the day in Prince Christian Sound is one of the great explorer scenes. Explore the Baffin Sea coast of Canada and Greenland, up to 340 km north of the Arctic Circle. After traversing the Northwest Passage, depart Nome in September 2020 along the Alaskan coast mapped by Captain Cook south to Vancouver. Then back to Antarctica. Simply put, L’Austral sails the summers of the polar regions.

Accommodation

All 132 staterooms are of generous size with sea views, and include all the usual luxury amenities: DVD, CD and iPod players with Video on Demand, Internet access, controllable AC, bath robe and toiletries, wardrobes encased in white leather, and king or twin beds. On Deck 3 there are eight Superior Staterooms each with a panoramic window, and 28 Deluxe Staterooms with balcony, walk-in robe and bathtub. On Decks 4 to 6 there are 92 Prestige Staterooms. Forty of these can be linked with adjoining cabins and reconfigured, to make 20 Prestige Suites. These will have two bathrooms, and separate sleeping and entertainment areas. Staterooms can accommodate a third person.

Food and Dining

French cuisine making good use of local fresh foods is a feature of this vessel. The two restaurants welcome guests to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The 268-seat Gastronomic Restaurant, at the rear and adjacent to the Marina, serves meals and complimentary wines worthy of the finest restaurants. The smaller Grill Restaurant adjacent to the pool offers al fresco dining with buffet lunches and themed dinners. Dress for dining is smart casual – it’s only the waiters who wear black ties and white gloves.

Entertainment

Lounges are used for lectures by prominent experts, depending on the voyage, and also for shows, as is the 260-seat Theatre. For solitude retire to the library, games area with Wii™ consoles, or Internet room. Every guest can feel comfortable relaxing in his/her own way. Guests will find that most entertainment comes from ocean views and on-shore excursions. After all, this is an expedition vessel! Evenings are the times to share the day’s experiences with friends.
