I am extremely unlikely to cruise again because of the motion sickness. However I will strongly recommend to all my friends to book with Clean Cruising as the whole booking experience was very professional, friendly and informative. The staff I spoke to treated me more like a friend than a customer. This was a great experience."

Nieuw Amsterdam Overview

Until March 2020 Nieuw Amsterdam sails out of Fort Lauderdale to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Most cruises berth at four ports, including company resorts at Half Moon Cay and Amber Cove, with their private beaches and water sports. The other ports take you, variously, to old pirate haunts, swimming among ray fish, or a touch of Mexico. Itineraries are mostly 7 nights, or by joining cruises take a 14-night holiday. In April 2020 cross the Atlantic and visit 14 ports in the Mediterranean on the way to Venice. Then for most of 2020 Nieuw Amsterdam offers two 12-night cruises of the classic ports of the Eastern Mediterranean (even to Istanbul). Join these for a 24-night specialty. From November 2020 Nieuw Amsterdam is again in the Caribbean, repeating her two 7-night itineraries. From May 2021 the ship moves to Alaska sailing each way between Anchorage and Vancouver. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities. Holland America Line arranges excellent onshore tours, and pre- and post-tour packages.

Accommodation

Of the staterooms, 85% have an outside view, and of these four-fifths have a private balcony. Staterooms are spacious, and include: Interior large and standard; Ocean-view, some with panoramic windows; and three levels of suites – Pinnacle, Neptune and Signature. Basic features include a flat-panel TV and DVD player (book your DVDs by phone), ample storage, personal safe, excellent twin/queen bedding, Elemis Aromapure bath amenities, bathrobes, fresh fruit, shoeshine and nightly turndown service. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. Triple and quad cabins are available, as well as interconnecting cabins for up to six guests. There are 29 wheelchair-accessible staterooms, mostly near elevators. There are no single cabins.

Food and Dining

The two-deck main Dining Room serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating on the upper deck. The Master Chefs’ three-course menus are excellent, and waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. Ask for a table for 2/4/6/8. Special dietary requests can be ordered pre-cruise. Two nights in seven are formal nights, perhaps preceded with pre-dinner drinks, then after your meal retire to the Show Lounge or a musical recital. There are three alternative restaurants, all best to reserve in advance: The Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, the renowned Asian-themed Tamarind offers cuisine from across SE and E Asia, and the (no service charge) Italian-American-influenced Canaletto. Ask about wine packages.

Entertainment

At night the two-deck Vista Show Lounge offers (twice nightly) musical productions, cabaret, and its features include three video screens. Alternatively, attend a musical recital in one of the lounges, dance to the backing of a band ensemble, watch sport in the multi-screen sports bar, or sip drinks while your request is sung by the pianist or guitarist. Three outstanding musical options are: the Lincoln Center Stage chamber music (seats 100); Billboard Onboard, with two pianos and a chance to join the singing; and B.B.King’s Blues Club. View recent movies in the Screening Room, unless you’d prefer to watch your choice of DVD in your cabin. Through the evening the disco and nightclub on the top deck will take you into the early hours of the morning, very inviting if the new day is a Sea Day and you’ve ordered breakfast in your cabin. The large casino has lots of playing options.
