Xiamen, or Amoy, stands on an island located inside a large inlet on the SE coast of Fujian Province, and is joined to the mainland by a five km long causeway. One of China's most tourist-friendly cities, Xiamen was recently voted China's cleanest city. The city has many attractions for the tourist, including its surrounding countryside that provides spectacular scenery and pleasant tree-lined beaches, giving it the feel of a holiday resort. Adding to the resort atmosphere is the little island of Gulangyu, a ten-minute ferry ride to the SW, where the old colonial homes of Europeans and Japanese still line the island's traffic-free streets. Okinawa Island is the largest of a group of one hundred and fifty islands, the Ryukyu islands, scattered over a wide area in the southernmost prefecture of Japan. The city of Okinawa is second to the capital Naha, 22km to the SW. It has a separate history from the rest of Japan, having originally been an independent kingdom (Ryukyu), then under the power of China, followed by the US military which still has many occupied military bases there.
