    Longyearbyen lies on the river Longyearelva on the Norwegian Island of Spitsbergen high in the Arctic. It is the world’s northern-most town, as all settlements further north are research or meteorological outposts. The modern town, fringed by abandoned mining detritus, enjoys a superb backdrop including two glacier tongues, Longyearbreen and Lars Hjertabreen.     Tasiilaq (meaning “the place with a lake”, and known as Ammassalik until 1997) is a town (population 2,000) in SE Greenland, just 106 km below the Arctic Circle, and 760 km due west of Reykjavik in Iceland. It lies on the southeastern coast of Ammassalik Island, lying tightly against the mainland. The research station Sermilik is located 15 km northwest of Tasiilaq on the west coast of the island.     Nansen Harbor lies on the coast of East Greenland, 785 km to the WSW of Iceland, and 260 km south of the Arctic Circle. It lies inside Umivik Bay. Upernattivik Island (Upernarsuak) lies in the middle of the inner part of the bay. The area contrasts with the jagged Greenland coast, and the Greenland ice sheet comes down to the shore smoothly, with only a few appearances of exposed rock.     Located on the southernmost tip of Greenland, the largest island in the world, is Prins Christian Sund (Danish), 500m wide and 100 km long, with mountains either side rising 1000m above sea level. It is awe-inspiring, with its rugged beauty of narrow passages, dramatic rock formations, steep fjords, drifting ice floes, and towering glaciers marking the southern tip of the massive Greenland ice field.     Narsaq is centrally located on a plain in the giant fjord system in Greenland. The area is a great place to sightsee, and is full of abundant wildlife including seals, salmon, trout, and whales, as well as icebergs from the nearby glacier. It is the youngest town in Greenland, founded as late as 1959.     Evighedsforden (‘Everlasting Fjord’; also Kangerlussuatsiaq Fjord) in SW Greenland lies just below the Arctic Circle along its 90 km length. The fjord flows in a deep canyon into the Davis Strait, with a water depth of 700m. Its feed-in glaciers drain the Maniitsoq ice sheet.     Kangerlussuaq (Danish: Søndre Strømfjord) is a settlement in western Greenland in the Qeqqata municipality, located at the head of a fjord of the same name, and just inside the Arctic Circle. The town lies between glacial-fed Qinnguata Kuussua river to the SE, fjord to the SW, and hills rising sharply to 400m to the north. Russell Glacier and the Greenland ice sheet lie about 22km further east. The town is situated about 190km inland from Davis Strait, at the head of the longest fjord in western Greenland.
