![]() Daphne Island (Isla Daphne) is a small inactive volcanic island north of Santa Cruz Island and 12 km west of the Baltra Airport in the Galápagos Islands, a small archipelago of islands belonging to Ecuador in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is also known as Isla Daphne Major to distinguish it from its smaller companion (Daphne Minor) just 4 km to the NE. It consists of a crater, devoid of trees, with a rim that rises 120 m above sea-level. Though easily accessible to most visitors to the Galápagos, the national park service has highly restricted visits to this island, as it is primarily used for scientific research. ![]() Urvina Bay (or Urbina Bay) is located at the foot of Alcedo Volcano, on the west coast of Isabela Island, the largest of the Galápagos Islands. They are a remote archipelago of equatorial volcanic islands situated in the eastern Pacific Ocean, about 955 km west of mainland Ecuador, of which they are a province. Urvina Bay is one of the best and the most recent example of geological uplift in the Galápagos. In 1954 the shoreline rose nearly 4.5 metres, and moved 1200 metres further out to sea, exposing giant coral heads and stranding fish schools, sharks, sea turtles and lobsters on what was now the shore.
