Life aboard River Countess
From April to November River Countess offers 7-night river cruises out of Venice, south to the Po River delta, and upstream about 75 km. The first two nights are spent in Venice on board. From the Po River coach tours visit three towns in the surrounding delta countryside: Verona, Bologna or Ferrara, and Ravenna. The cruise can part of an extended 13-day ‘Splendours of Italy’ package, beginning with the three days in Venice. On disembarking land tours by coach continue on to Florence and Rome. Before embarking in Venice, travellers may opt to begin in Milan and travel to Venice by coach.

River Countess was completely refurbished in 2009 and again in 2012, combining quality craftsmanship and the latest technical innovations. Included in the cruise are first-class hotels (according to the cruise), all shore excursions with audio headphones and local English-speaking guides. River Countess was ranked #1 of ALL cruise ships by Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2013.

Accommodation
All cabins are outside, comfortable, and maintained by twice-a-day service. All have premium bedding, pillow options, controllable AC, direct-dial telephone, flat-screen TV with infotainment, storage, built-in safe, vanity, hair dryer, bathrobes, and compact marble bathroom fitted out with L’Occitane products. Lower deck cabins have a wide head-height window, and middle deck staterooms have a large panoramic window. An elevator services all three interior decks.

Twenty-two of the 67 staterooms have French balconies (including the Suites). The four Suites have extra amenities including a bottle of wine on arrival, larger sitting area, private DVD player, slippers, daily fruit and cookie plate, refrigerator, morning coffee and tea, Nespresso coffee machine and fine teas, continental breakfast, evening amuse-bouche, shoe shine, and free laundry service. Suites have a bathtub.

Food and Dining
The Savoy Restaurant is lined with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and provides open seating. Dining is acclaimed as “best-of-the-best” by observers of the river cruise industry. Breakfasts and lunches are full buffet with an extensive array of hot and cold items, and individually prepared items are available. Menu items change daily, follow the region and season, and include Continental and American preparations. Local and regional specialities are featured. Dinner is open-seating with four courses. Accompanying dinner are fine wines and a selection of beers and soft drinks.

Alternatively, dine al fresco at lunch and dinner on the Sun Deck during good weather. Menus follow the river, using fresh local ingredients and cuisines. Special dietary and vegetarian requests are catered for. Afternoon tea is served in the main lounge. All day Bistro Menu is for snacks. The specialty coffee and tea bar is open around the clock. Dining features include the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Receptions, Welcome and Farewell Gala Dinners, and the ‘Epicurean Adventurer Program’. Uniworld received the TravelAge West Wave Award Editor’s Pick 2014 “Best Overall Cruise Line for River Cruising”.

Entertainment
The cruise focus is on exploration and walking tours with local guides. Tour variations continue to expand to meet the requests of guests: you have a choice of five ways to explore, according to your wishes. Travel lectures expand your knowledge of the regions visited, and the Epicurean Adventurer Program enhances your appreciation of local cuisine ashore. Visiting entertainers come on board along the route. A Family-Friendly program is offered during school holiday times.

Public areas include the Il Castillo Lounge with a full-service bar, and Captain’s Lounge and library. The sun deck (parts of which is enclosed) has deck chairs, and chess and shuffleboard. Health facilities include a fitness room with jet massage shower cabin, massage room and boutique. Bicycles and Nordic walking sticks are provided for self-organised sight-seeing.
