Micronesia is full of maritime history, with many epic battles fought in the region in the last century. The islands share an interesting combination of Japanese, American and Island cultures. Scuba diving and water activities are very popular for visitors. Micronesia lies in the Western Pacific north of the Equator, between New Guinea and Japan. Its thousands of small islands are havens for diving amidst coral reefs shared with sunken ships, planes and submarines that are legacies of WWII. Chuuk is home to one of the great underwater museums of the world, Guam offers duty-free status, and Saipan hosts hordes of Japanese tourists, with its golf courses and resorts.

Vessels generally call at a port in Micronesia as part of a world cruise. Occasionally small explorer ships visit Micronesia, though not as often as they visit Melanesia (from Papua New Guinea across the Solomon Islands to Fiji) in the South Pacific. The smaller the ship the more opportunities visitors have to immerse themselves in local island activities.

Silver Discoverer visits the Yap and Palau (and then islands off PNG) in late 2017 in their explorer program. Fanning Atoll south of Hawaii is visited by Maasdam in March 2018, and Crystal Serenity in January 2019. Guam (currently in the news) is visited by Coral Princess in October 2018.
