The village of Mata-Utu, located on Wallis Island, is the capital of the territory. Situated in the small village of Mata-Utu is the cathedral built using hand-cut blue volcanic stone with two blocklike towers overlooking the wharf.

The King’s palace is beside this cathedral and opposite is the Fale Fono, the main meeting place of the island’s chiefs. Near Mata-Utu you will find the island's most important archaeological site: Talietumu, a huge lovingly refurbished structure of the once-fortified Tongan settlement, built about AD 1450.
