Cruises from Orinoco River
The Orinoco River, 2140 km long, originates in Columbia, and is the major river system of Venezuela. Its delta with scores of islands covers 22,500 sq.km., is 200 km long and 370 km at its widest, and drains into the Atlantic Ocean. upstream. Of interest to cruisers in the labyrinthine delta are the of tropical rain forests, tall palms, wetlands, and freshwater swamp forests. Visit the indigenous Warao (“boat”) people and their villages, with wall-less thatched houses built on stilts due to annual flooding. The timber stilts reminded other explorers of Venice, hence the country’s name, Venezuela.
