La Guaira is a key port for Venezuela, facing the Caribbean Sea. The capital Caracas is situated 30 km to the SE. Off shore 250 km to the NW are the ABC islands - Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire – in the Lesser Antilles. During the 18th C pirate attacks resulted in La Guaira transformed into a fortified walled city. Although the city dates from 1577, the narrow coastal plane and lack of a natural harbour hindered development.
