Cruises visiting Kingstown & all Kingstown cruises for 2013 - 2014
Kingstown is the chief port of the island of St Vincent and the capital of the St Vincent and the Grenadines island nation in the southern Caribbean. Often referred to as the ‘City of Arches’, Kingstown is a lively town, and the close proximity of the wharf adds vitality, noise, and colour to the small but busy capital. Arches, cobbled streets, magnificent churches and historic stone buildings blend with the functional and the modern. After exploring the wonderful architecture, such as St Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption, don't miss the Botanical Gardens with its wealth of tropical plants, flowers, and birds.
At the fish market along the bay front watch vendors chop fish into steaks with large machetes, and deftly scale and clean them. This area together with traders, trucks and men pushing large wooden barrows back and forth between the wharf, warehouses and the market is well worth exploring. The main shopping areas are found in the area where Upper Long Lane and the Lower Long Lane are split by the central market. Here are found numerous stalls, boutiques and street vendors. A must-see is the historic Fort Charlotte perched at 180 m just a short drive to the west of the town, which offers spectacular views over the bay.
Music is ever so popular here so take the opportunity to enjoy calypso, soca, steelpan and reggae as well as string band music, quadrille and bele music together with traditional storytelling. Not surprisingly, most of the nation’s official government buildings including the Financial Complex, built in 1991 and accommodates the Office of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister as well as those of other departments of government, and a Court Office of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court are all located in Kingstown.
