Cruises from Unga Island
Unga Island is the largest of the dozen or so Shumagin Islands that lie just south of Southwest Alaska, that part of the State of Alaska that extends in an arc west to the Aleutian Islands. Unga Island was formerly named Grekodelarovskoe (‘Greek-Delarov’) for Evstratii Ivanovich Delarov who explored the area in the late 18th century on behalf of the Russian-American Company.
Read moreThe island is now effectively uninhabited since the population of Unga had departed by 1969 for the adjacent Popof Island and its major fishing port of Sand Point (population 1000). Unga is now a ghost town, a graveyard for its old abandoned dwellings.
