Actually the peaks of a submarine mountain range, the Aleutian Islands, part of the U.S. state of Alaska, are now part of the National Wildlife Refuge that was set aside in 1980 as a 3.3-million-acre unit of the 4.9-million-acre Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Most of these islands are covered with lush green tundra dotted with summer wildflowers and carpeted with grasses, sedges, mosses, lichens, and heath. Despite being almost exterminated by both Russian and US traders, sea otters have returned in great numbers, and can be easily seen along with sea lions and harbor seals. The waters are home to a great diversity of fish, including halibut, cod, perch, sablefish, yellowfin sole, pollack, sand lance, herring, and salmon. In contrast, most of the land mammals, including foxes, reindeer, and caribou, have been introduced by humans.

Surrounded by active volcanoes, sea-sculpted coastline and mile-after-mile of untamed landscape, the adventurous traveller can explore ancient Aleut village sites, visit agate beaches, view an array of birds, wildlife and marine life or enjoy unparalleled fishing opportunities. Aleut families have inhabited the region since the Second Ice Age. Today it is home to the communities of Akutan, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove and Sand Point. These communities share a common heritage and reliance on the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea, but each holds its own unique charms.
