Cruises visiting Honiara & all Honiara cruises for  2017-2018

View Honiara 2017-2018 cruises for 5 ships listing 11 cruises from Honiara with today's best deals!

Honiara, located on the northern coast of the island of Guadalcanal, is the capital of the Solomon Islands, which lie between Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. Pijin is the principal language. The climate is tropical, and while the most pleasant time to visit is winter, July to September, the cooling sea breezes temper the humidity and heat along all coasts year-round. The island became the scene of the important Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II. Organised tours are available to visit many battle sites, where some of the fiercest battles took place, and where many relics of war are to be found, including a Quonset hut.

Honiara is Solomon Islands' springboard for tourism activities. The gardens of the National Art Gallery are popular for afternoon strolls, while the reconstructed Government House, the National Museum, the Yacht Club and particularly the Central Market are all worth visiting. The Botanical Gardens display a large variety of orchids, which together with the rich and varied bird life is delightful. The spectacular Tenaru falls can be found a one hour's drive and a three-hour hike from Henderson International Airport, and is well worth the effort.

Honiara City wharf opened to tenders from large cruise ships in late 2016. Visitors are welcomed along the pedestrian walk with displays of local crafts, in particular wood carvings inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Tender boats are also welcomed by a traditional war “tomoko” canoe paddled by 26 locals. Ten kilometres east of the port is the Lunga Point airfield that was a centre of the Guadacanal Campaign in 1942 between US and Japanese troops, the battles being a turning point in the Pacific war.
