New Plymouth is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Twenty-seven kilometres to the south is the conical snow-capped dormant volcano Mt. Egmont/Mt. Taranaki (2518m). With the region’s rich volcanic soil, the city is well known for its beautiful gardens such as the Pukekura Park in the middle of the city, and Pukeiti, a rhododendron garden of international significance high on the Pouakai Range.
