Veracruz - aka Puerto de Veracruz - is a major port city and municipality on the Gulf of Mexico in the east coast Mexican state of Veracruz. A natural harbour, Veracruz has been fought over throughout its history, and boasts the title as the Four Times Heroic City after resisting invasions from France and the USA. It was founded by Hernán Cortés, who first landed there in 1519 at the start of his quest to conquer Mexico for Spain.
