Dakhla is a town of 85,000 inhabitants in Western Sahara, a sparsely populated disputed territory bordered by Morocco (which has administrative control), Algeria, Mauritiana and the Atlantic Ocean. The town is situated on a narrow peninsula such that ships anchor in a large lagoon protected from the ocean. The official language is Arabic, though Spanish and French are widely used. Fishing supports the economy.
